It was Bonnie Higdon’s birthday on Wednesday. But instead of celebrating, her husband woke up angry. Christopher Higdon, 66, took his anger out by shooting at the couple’s television. Then he began shooting at Bonnie, who called 911.
But when Grayson County Sheriff Norman Chaffins and Maj. Corey Knochel arrived Bonnie said her husband of 40 years had already decided he was going to take them on.
“I said, ‘Chris, you know police have got more powerful guns than you got,’ because he just had a little rifle. He said, ‘Well, I’ll kill those sons of [expletive] before they should kill me.’ I said, ‘OK, good luck.’ And that’s all I said,” she told WLKY. Her husband then walked outside and opened fire on the officers.
Chaffins fired back, shooting Higdon three times and killing him.
“I don’t blame them, don’t blame them one bit. If someone was trying to shoot me, I’d try to shoot them, too,” she told WLKY.
She said it wasn’t the first time her husband had threatened to kill her. Bonnie said she married her husband when she was only 14, and that he was a violent alcoholic.

In his easement deal with the Corps obtained through the town of Palm Beach, Limbaugh is allowing the use of his 2.5 acre compound on the extreme north side of the island to “enhance shoreline management” and provide “storm protection in safe guarding coastal properties”.
The project involves bulldozers and mounts of sand several times per year. Palm Beach County Appraiser values Limbaugh’s property at 51 million dollars.

We applaud The Times for its rare action of publishing a front-page editorial, stressing the importance of addressing the never-ending, tragic loss of life related to firearms violence (“The Gun Epidemic,” Dec. 5).
Allowing unrestricted access to firearms without universal background checks, including military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, is unconscionable for a civilized society that prides itself on valuing life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
Additionally, laws that prevent medical professionals from speaking with their patients about firearms constitute inappropriate interference in the patient-clinician relationship.
Our organizations, the American College of Physicians and the American Bar Association, joined with seven other major national medical and public health professional organizations to publish a “call to action” about firearms violence earlier this year in Annals of Internal Medicine.
We advocated adoption of a number of reasonable and sensible gun control regulations that are consistent with the Second Amendment and do not go against any Supreme Court decisions. The recommendations in that paper have been endorsed by 52 national and other major organizations that recognize how critical it is to address this major public health problem.

Trump has given new life and form to the idea of the Southern strategy, by reshaping it in the era of the “war on terror” in a post-9/11 world.
There is a saying that goes “Not all Republicans are racists, but all racists are probably Republicans.” In the case of Trump, there is really nothing that could be more accurate.
According to a recent Washington Post-ABC poll, nearly half of Republican voters favor deporting all undocumented immigrants and barring all Syrian refugees from entering the United States. This fact helps explain Trump’s inability to be negatively affected by the absolutely disgusting bile that he spews out on a daily basis to anyone with a microphone.
First Trump went after Hispanic people by calling South American immigrants rapists and criminals. Then he turned on Syrian refugees, calling them terrorists and saying he would ban them from entering the country. Both times he was rewarded with stronger support. Trump took it up a notch again, by saying all Muslims should be tracked by the government and forced to carry special identification. His last and most incendiary remarks as of now rest with a call for an outright ban on any Muslim entering the U.S.

“Not all Muslims are terrorists, but all terrorists are Muslims.” How many times have you heard that one? Sure, we heard Fox News’s Brian Kilmeade say it, but to me, that was simply part of the Fox News plan to make their viewers dumber, as we saw again this past weekend when its terrorism “expert” Steve Emerson was caught fabricating the story that Birmingham, England, is closed to non-Muslims. But more alarmingly, even some reasonable people have uttered this statement.
And that comment is often followed up by the question: Why don’t we see Christian, Buddhist, or Jewish terrorists?
Obviously, there are people who sincerely view themselves as Muslims who have committed horrible acts in the name of Islam. We Muslims can make the case that their actions are not based on any part of the faith but on their own political agenda. But they are Muslims, no denying that.

Back on September 17, as Donald Trump basked in the post-Labor Day glow of being the Republican Party's undisputed frontrunner, he spoke to a boisterous crowd in New Hampshire and took a question from an especially boisterous fan. "We have a problem in this country. It's called Muslims. We know our current president is one. You know he's not even an American," said the Trump t-shirt-wearing man. "We have training camps growing where they want to kill us. That's my question: When can we get rid of them?"
Trump reassured the agitated man: "We're going to be looking at a lot of different things."
Turns out one of those "things" under review was Trump's stop-the-presses, are-you-kidding-me? proposal this week to implement "a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country's representatives can figure out what is going on." (Yes, it's likely unconstitutional. Yes, logistically it's not possible.)
The announcement dropped so many jaws that not only did key Republicans denounce the move, but lots of conservative commentators also rushed to deplore Trump's shortsighted extremism.
But boy, talking about shutting the barn door about three months too late. These are many of the same players who enabled Trump's bigoted rise and cheered his derogatory, especially when its target was the White House. The conservative media helped lay out a blueprint of fear and paranoia for him.
As Nathan Lean noted in his book, The Islamophobia Industry: How the Right Manufactures Fear of Muslims, back in August 2006, Fox News guest Mike Gallagher suggested an "all Muslims checkpoint line" at American airports. And after the Fort Hood shooting in November 2009, Fox's Brian Kilmeade suggested "special screenings" for Muslim U.S. soldiers.

I would like to bring you up to date regarding the question of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis resettling a family of refugees from Syria. The family arrived safely in Indianapolis last night.I thank Governor Pence for meeting with me last Wednesday, when I was able to explain in some detail the plight of this family as well as the role of the Archdiocese’s Refugee and Immigrant Services program in welcoming them to Indianapolis, where the family already has some relatives. I listened to the governor’s concerns regarding security and prayerfully considered his request that we defer from welcoming them until Congress had approved new legislation regarding immigrants and refugees. I informed the Governor prior to the family’s arrival that I had asked the staff of Catholic Charities to receive this husband, wife and their two small children as planned.

By 58%-33%, those surveyed Wednesday through Sunday said the group's funding shouldn't be eliminated. The national poll of 1,000 likely voters has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
