200 year old ice

Here are more pictures from sunny Saturday at Mendenhall Glacier. It was quite spectacular really.

Mendenhall Glacier, more shots

More Saturday, sunshine photos. I have probably a hundred or so. On the last set of photos, you can see some scientists walking on top of the Glacier. I thought that would be kind of great to do, but you need ropes, locating device and knowledgeable people because if you break through the snow, you are surrounded by ice.

Juneau, Mendenhall Glacier

We have sunshine like crazy today. It is about 20 degrees. I cross country skiied into Mendenhall Glacier and got a lot of pictures. I will download them tomorrow.
I am thinking of going back tonight to see the Northern Lights. There are few lights when skiiing on Mendenhall Lake to the Glacier, so I am thinking of returning to check it out. (These are old pictures)
Happy Valentine's Day

Juneau, random shots 2

Tired of snow so here are some old shots. Internet is up again. I cross country skiied into the Mendenhall Glacier last night. It was very dark and the sky as clear, I was able to see lots of stars. I was the only one skiing - great skiing.

Juneau, random shots 1

I was looking through my photos and saw some shots I wanted to get up. Random shots from the past 3 months. Everything now is snow - these have less snow.

Cold and clear

It was about 20 degrees this morning but super sunny.
Nice sunrises and sunsets too. My internet at home is down so do not have much computer time these days.

sunrise and snow

We had another great sunrise and I took a few pictures. Funny, the sun was out, I took pictures and then went on to school. I got to school and it snowed another 7 inches.

The truck is my old reliable beast. See how big the snow piles are? That is about a week of snow from the parking lot. We have had steady snow all week but it has only built up about 2 to 4 inches yesterday and today. The temperature has been getting right about 32 degrees and the snow melts a bit and then it freezes to make ice. It can be very slick at times.

Avalanche, from Douglas

Here is the Avalanche from Douglas, across the Gastineau Channel. It is one big hill.
People are still talking about the loudness and the scariness of the Avalanche. It was about 300 yards wide.

Avalanche

Here is a picture of the avalanche. They got the road open last night. I was at the mountain when it happened so I missed the noise. I was told that the noise was chilling and scary. A neighbor's dog was shaking in fear for an hour.

The avalanche went all the way over the road and into the water. By the way, there used to be 40 foot trees to the right of the road.

Major Avalanche in Juneau

There was a major avalanche today just across from where I live. It is just outside of downtown Juneau, at a place where I take pictures of old flooded boats. I stopped there once and thought, there sure is a lot of snow here. It was snow that had previously fallen. ( from small avalanches)

I will try to get a picture in the next few days. It knocked down trees and covered the road with 20 feet of snow. If I want to see a lot of Eagles, I go down that road.

Snow - foot in 3 hours

I snowboarded, went to the Glacier to take pictures and came home and getting ready for school as well as being on the computer a bit. I decided to go outside and check on how much snow had fallen and there is a foot of snow!

I just got back from shoveling and it is still coming down hard! I live on a hill and I was told by a neighbor that a number of cars are stuck on the hill. I will be chaining up in the morning.

Two years ago I was in San Diego, Ca saying, I sure miss the snow. This much snow might be carrying it to extremes. I do wish I had a day off to go snowboard and cross country ski though.

Beautiful Day!

It was a beautiful day at the mountain today! I snowboarded in steady snow and the sun even came out a bit, rare stuff. I came home and had some Chicken stew and then went to Mendenhall Glacier. It was snowing hard all the way to the Glacier and the clouds were dark and closing in fast. When I got to the Glacier, the sun shone over the Glacier and was dark everywhere else. Quite impressive. The Glacial ice seems to glow from deep inside when the sun hits it. Pictures do not do the place justice really. Because of the rain and the 32 degree temperatures, no cross country skiing on the glacier. I also saw a porcupine, a river otter, eagles, ravens, crows, seagulls and mallard ducks.

These pictures were taken Saturday, during the rain downpour. I will get up the sunny pictures later in the week.

Raining and windy all day!

Mendenhall Glacier is a mess, lots of slush to get there. It was a downpour there this morning. I went to the mountain and snowboarded this afternoon. The upper lift was closed by winds. The lower lift had about 40 MPH winds and it is usually pretty calm.
More rain expected tonight and tomorrow. There is a wet snow at the mountain though. I I went down one slope I had not done in a while - MOGULS, that was why I did not use that one much. I fell on the moguls but did OK the 2nd run. I even got in a little cross country skiing in. I have to cross country at the ski resort because the rain has ruined the cross country paths in the glacier.
I hope to get up again tomorrow.

Gray and White and cloudy

We are always under clouds in Juneau. It was rain clouds in the fall and then snow clouds in the winter. Last night, our snow clouds turned to rain clouds. We got about 15 inches of new snow and now we have constant rain. I was hoping to keep the snow through the weekend so I could cross country ski and snowboard. I am getting over a cold, so I should really slow down a bit.

These pictures are of the rare view of a night sky, which I just happened to see in the evening early this past week. Seeing the sun is memorable as is seeing stars and the moon.

6 " of snow and snowing like crazy!

Snowed 6" last night and it is snowing like crazy! They are saying winter storm warning and at least 15 inches of snow. Just got done shoveling and putting chains on - time to go to work. Still not feeling 100% but I will make it ok.

Have a good Friday!

Almost Friday!

Some old pictures of Mendenhall Glacier!
This week has been kind of slow. I have not felt too good so been a step behind all week. The week is almost done though. I hope to hit the Glacier this weekend along with the ski slope.

snow all day

It snowed all day and just beloe freexing. We even had a blizzard for a while.
No Mendenhall today - feel like I might be getting a cold.

Mendenhall Glacier

Haven't been to Mendenhall for two weeks, think I need to make a run out there.

no snow today

No snow today but we have 5-7 inches forecast for tonight and tomorrow. I see the groundhog saw his shadow so I will get ready for more of the same. I am kind of thinking that the snow still beats rain. There may be a point at which I cry uncle on the snow but ok for now.

snow pictures

Here are a couple sf snow pictures from Saturday. We got a foot of snow. The first picture is what I see when I walk out of the house. The green beast in the top picture is my truck. It is like a bulldozer when I have chains on it.

I snowboarded yesterday and today. Yesterday was great! I felt like a snowboarder. Today: Lots of wind and iced up goggles. Everything was white and had a hard time telling where the boundaries were. Made it but it was not as easy as yesterday.
