Most Chicagoans probably thought they’d see pigs fly before they saw a Donald Trumppresidency, but one local architectural firm is taking that idea to its literal extreme. New World Design Ltd. has shared a hypothetical proposal that would partially obscure the view of the infamous Trump Tower Chicago sign with four giant, gold-colored balloon pigs. As the firm’s proposal indicates, the pigs would be tethered to buoys in the Chicago River and provide “visual relief to the citizens of Chicago,” many of whom are presumably tired of seeing Trump’s name everywhere.
While open to a variety of interpretations, the installation’s design is specifically inspired by the artwork of Pink Floyd’s classic 1977 album Animals. The artwork, conceived by Roger Waters and designed by Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell of Hipgnosis, was partly inspired by George Orwell’s political fable Animal Farm and features a balloon pig flying between the chimneys of Battersea Power Station in London. NWD’s design incorporates the same symbolic critique of capitalist greed, though the architects “encourage folly viewers to listen and make their own interpretations.”
There’s no word yet on whether the proposal will ultimately be successful, but stranger things (e.g. Donald Trump’s presidency) have happened. Check out the concept artwork for the installation below.
