This is Colbert on Gun Control Changes

Stephen Colbert was one of the only late-night hosts to talk about what is an ongoing protest in the U.S. Congress. At 11:30 am Wednesday, Republican House leadership shut off the cameras to fellow House members who took over the floor. Despite the GOP recess and Republicansadjourning until after the July 4 holiday, Democrats continue to hold the floor.
“I’ll do that,” Colbert said. “After all, they’re fighting for two things that 90 percent of Americans are in favor of: Stopping terrorists from getting guns and sitting down.”
He was shocked to find out that C-SPAN has no control over the House’s TV cameras. The agreement is that the Speaker controls them, so when he announces a recess, the cameras go off. “If you don’t control what we see, what do you SPAN?” Colbert asked. “I mean, if not controlling cameras, what does C-SPAN do?” To be fair, the network was able to capture pirated videos from Rep. Scott Peters (D-CA) and Beto O’Rourke (D-TX), who began broadcasting through Periscope and Facebook Live.
While Colbert stands in solidarity with the Democrats, there were some problems with the beginning of the message. As members began to sit down, Rep. John Larson (D-CT) had this to say: “Rise up, Democrats! Rise up, Americans! This cannot stand!” This, while members were sitting down to begin a sit-in.
“Democrats are demanding a vote before the Fourth of July recess,” Colbert said. “And to send that message they chanted ‘no bill, no break.’ Almost drowning out the gun lobby shouting, ‘I’ll make the check out to cash!'”
One of the best responses by the GOP came from Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK), who said, “I don’t think we should allow any group to bring the work of the House to a halt.”
“It’s true. It’s true. You wouldn’t want the gridlock to lose its momentum,” Colbert mocked Cole. “Don’t let your complete paralysis get in the way of a good stalemate.”
