In this interview, a fiery Elizabeth Warren takes Senate Republicans to task for their continual refusal to not even confirm but to even meet with President Obama’s nominee for the Supreme Court. “This has really just taken off in a direction that is a direct insult to the president, it is a direct insult to the Constitution and now it is a direct insult to Judge Garland!”
“Filling a Supreme Court nomination is one of the most solemn tasks undertaken by this government. This isn’t supposed to be a circus. It’s not supposed to be some kind of crazy political process. Now it is our job in the United States Senate to hold hearings, to examine [Garland’s] credentials and then to have a vote on him. That’s what the Constitution calls for. That’s what advise and consent means. We want Judge Garland to come over…and I want to be able to have a vote on him!
Warren highlights the ridiculous and truly insulting double standard of refusing to give Obama a hearing just because “he’s a Democrat,” which flies in the face of hundreds of years of Congressional procedure and respect. These Senate Republicans, it seems, aren’t willing to begrudge him the slightest courtesy or benefit of the doubt. They are a disgrace to the spirit of our democracy, and they must be replaced if they won’t do their jobs.
