14 Ways the 114th Congress Plans to Attack the Environment and Undermine Public Health

Even before they were sworn in, Republican leaders of the 114th Congress vowed to reward their fossil fuel industry backers by pushing through an agenda that only big polluters could love—endangering the nation's air, lands, water, and climate. Putting profits before people, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and his GOP allies want to gut the laws that protect public health and keep our families safe. Some of their schemes:

1. Blocking the president's plan to reduce carbon pollution from power plants.

Power plants in the United States currently have no limit on how much carbon pollution they can spew into the air. That pollution—a central cause of global warming—makes those plants the country's single-largest driver of the climate crisis. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is working to close that loophole with its proposed Clean Power Plan, but Republican leaders have vowed to stop the new standards—even though 7 out of 10 Americans want limits and eight million comments were filed in support. Doctors and nurses, religious groups, business leaders, and even industry groups have all voiced their backing. But GOP leaders would put fossil fuel profits over public health.

2. Forcing approval of the destructive Keystone XL tar sands oil pipeline.
