Tundra - Internet down a lot

This is tundra behind the school. WHY ARE HOUSES AND BUILDINGS RAISED?: 1. Flooding.
2. Because of the tundra: If buildings are on the ground and you heat them, the warmth will eventually warm the ground. This warming of the ground will cause the earth to get soft and ruin whatever foundation your have. So, you either insulate the ground very well before building or you raise them off the ground. There have been school gyms that failed because they were on the ground and not insulated.

INTERNET DOWN A LOT: I usually try to get pictures up on the weekend but we have blasting wind and the internet is hit and miss. I get shut down before I can get things onto the site. Even the schools internet is down.

Very interesting about the buildings needing to be raised.
How much daylight are you getting now? Sounds like you've adjusted to the weather very well. Those winds don't sound very pleasant though.

It is daylight from about 10:30 to 6:30 and the day is getting longer by the day.

They say in the springtime, the sun is out until 11:00 PM.

I had the unique experience of camping out near Fairbanks for a week once during the summer solstice - I experienced the midnight sun and the very weird thing having no setting sun does to your body (like you never really get tired).

Camping in the lower 50, it is advisable to put a tarp underneath the tent to prevent getting wet. They told us to not put a tarp under the tent in Ak, because the permafrost needs to breathe or something. Am I remembering that correctly?

The word I have is that the permafrost starts to melt if you cover it. The tarp holds any heat into the soil and it melts making a slushy blog.
