Where I live

Ashley, Here is what the place looked like yesterday. We got another 6 inches of snow after this too.

Mendenhall GLacier - from a distance

I was cross country skiing into the Glacier here.

The mountain pictures were taken out of my front room windows. The top picture is looking down the road.

Juneau this past weekend - we got snow, finally!

Raining today

We have had two days of down pouring rain in Juneau. I have not been out to the glacier but I am sure the lake ice is covered with rain. I will take some pictures with the rain water when I can. It is dark when I get off school so not today. I would like to make it out to the glacier with but the rainy ice makes it too slippery. I am getting tired of rain.

More Mendenhall Glacier

I happened to make it to the Glacier last Saturday and Sunday. We had Sunshine. Saturday there was still water to deal with so I did not go out to the glacier itself. Sunday, the ice was solid so the up close pictures were from Sunday.

Mendenhall GLacier - ice is back, after the rains.

I went into Mendenhall Lake and to the Glacier after the water refroze. Here are some pictures of my trip. The ice was quite slick and I dropped the camera once. We got 2 inches of snow last night but it has been raining all day. I will probably not be able to get into the glacier until another freezing of water takes place. It has been a very warm winter, with rain instead of snow. Whenever I go out onto the ice and to the glacier, I hear calving and ice crashing taking place. The ice caves fell in on themselves. It can be awesome and even scary to hear a chunk of ice fall. It was not like that two years ago, when I was on the glacier. Today, they are having 1 and 2 feet of ice on the east coast as well as ice and snow in the south. I see the impacts of warming on our environment every time I go out to Mendenhall Glacier.
Those are ice climbers I saw while at the Glacier. They were climbing at night, using head lamps as I was running around the glacier.

Mendenhall Lake and Glacier before the rain.

This is Mendenhall Lake and Mendenhall Glacier before the 5 days of rain we have been getting. The snow is now gone and there is no longer snow on the ice covering the lake. We have an inch of water on top of the ice - rain water. We have had 40 degrees in Juneau the past 5 days or so.
