CNN’s Jake Tapper has clearly heard enough about President Donald Trump’s bogus claim that former President Obama wiretapped him at his Trump Tower residence during the 2016 presidential campaign.
However, the press has given the sensational story plenty of attention, which has allowed Trump’s surrogates to argue that there must be “something to the story” because the media keeps covering it. Tapper decided to spike Trump’s ridiculous wiretapping fairy tale once and for all with a blistering takedown.
Asked Tapper on his program, “Where did the president get this latest conspiracy from?” He then detailed its origins to ultraconservative radio host Mark Levin, whose patently false comments filtered its way through right-wing “news” outlets until it made it to America’s deranged Commander-in-Chief. Tapper shared that one “rather amazing detail” of what Trump is alleging is that not one of the right-wing news outlets “reported as fact what President Trump is claiming.”
Explained Jake, “It would be bad enough if the president valued conjecture and accusations of these sources more than the facts that he has access to… But it’s actually worse than that.” Added Tapper, “He took it one step forward and said [wiretapping] happened and President Obama was behind it.” Tapper reminded viewers of Trump’s previous birther claims about Obama, as well as the many other conspiracy theories that have been floated over the years by fringe characters. Stated Jake, “Keep in mind one not-irrelevant detail here for anyone trying to make sense of it all. We’ve been here before, and this is not a land with much sense, or respect for facts. This is a place of conspiracy theories untethered to facts.” He continued, “It goes on and on. None of it’s true. And the people around President Trump who are enabling this nonsense, the ones who know better, you have to ask yourselves this question: are you really serving the president? Are you really serving the American people?” Do you think Jake Tapper killed Trump’s idiotic wiretapping story once and for all? Watch Tapper’s full segment below:
