On Monday’s edition of Morning Joe, former Director of the NSA and CIA Gen. Michael Hayden weighted in on President Donald Trump’sclaim that his White house predecessor, Barack Obamawiretapped his campaign in Trump Tower.
The General, an old intelligence hand, was blunt and dismissive.
“If you take literally what the president tweeted, the plumbing just doesn’t work that way,” he said. “It could not have happened the way the president said it.”
According to Hayden, a president has not had the authority to do what Trump described in his tweets since the “mid 1970s,” suggesting that today a wiretap like that would require probable cause and approval from a judge.
Prominent Republicans have already publicly fretted about the implications of what it would mean if a FISA court judge did find probable cause to order a wiretap.
Hayden suggested that the president may have briefly forgotten who he was. “He could have called the Acting Director of National Intelligence and the Director of FBI and asked them questions,” he said. “He simply could have asked.”
After some goading from co-host Mika Brzezinski, the general let loose, speculating that Trump’s tweets were just a cynical media play.
“Let me go very, very dark on you,” Hayden intoned. “The President of the United States put his own reputation, the reputation of his predecessor, and the reputation of his nation at risk to get at least a draw out of the next 24 hours of news.”
