President Donald Trump held a news conference on Thursday afternoon that can only be described as an utter train wreck. Again, though, it’s not like everyone couldn’t see the train wreck coming.
Shep Smith of Fox News is the latest to respond to Trump’s Thursday afternoon antics, after such notable figures as CNN’s Jake Tapper, who called the presser “unhinged” and “wild.”
Smith began by addressing how Trump treated the accomplished reporter Jim Acosta of CNN, calling it out as ridiculous considering Acosta’s duly earned stature in the industry.
Smith eventually went on:
‘It’s crazy what we’re watching every day. It’s absolutely crazy. He keeps repeating ridiculous throwaway lines that are not true at all, and sort of avoiding this issue of Russia as if we’re some kind of fools for asking the question. Really? Your opposition was hacked, and the Russians were responsible for it, and your people were on the phone with Russia on the same day it was happening, and we’re fools for asking the questions? No, sir.’
The revelation that people from Trump’s team were in regular contact with Russian operatives came out in recent days. What’s not yet known is what Trump’s team members discussed in those conversations. The president has responded to questioning about it by accusing the media outlets who have posed the questions of peddling “fake news.”
Smith, though, was not through. He went on to directly address the president — perhaps having in mind Trump’s noted love of watching cable news — and to also issue what amounts to a call to action.
Smith continued:
‘We are not fools for asking these questions and we demand to know the answer to this question. You owe this to the American people. Your supporters will support you either way. If your people were on the phone [with the Russians,] what were they saying? We have a right to know. We absolutely do, and that you call us fake news and put us down like children for asking these questions on behalf of the American people is inconsequential. The people deserve that answer, at very least.’
