Blacks get shot when often Whites are arrested unharmed for similar offenses - a quick look

Here’s a quick, mini refresher course. For all those who want to believe that the Black Lives Matter movement is a hate and/or terrorist group (it ain’t), understand this: The impetus was to show the disparate treatment that is afforded to certain individuals (like George Zimmerman, who acted as self-proclaimed “security” of his apartment complex) and law enforcement when it comes to the killing of black people. Daily Kos reported on one of those ways in early July, detailing how whites who point guns at police or other members of the public have not been summarily and extrajudicially murdered in the street because officers “feared for their lives.” That is the narrative that is spun when black folks are armed … or assumed to be armed.

Korryn Gaines, 23, died Monday at the hands of a Baltimore county police department’s tactical unit. In response Blavity, a multicultural news and information site, lists 11 times police have successfully disarmed white people without killing anyone. There is, of course, some carryover from the July Daily Kos piece, but there are also a few that aren’t—ones that might literally make you go “hmmm” when you really think about it, such as:

Dylann Roof, the dude who walked into a church’s bible study in July of 2015 and shot nine people so he could set off a race war. Not only was Roof apprehended alive and disarmed, he was given a whopper from Burger King and–get this–a bullet proof vest. WOW.

The 177 bikers who had a shoot-out in Waco, Texas, in May of 2015. These guys were apprehended alive and disarmed after nine people died and 18 were injured. Pictures circulated all over the internet showing the bikers on their cell phones while they were in police custody. One wonders if they were calling their lawyers or brother bikers to come and provide back-up.

Robert Lewis Dear, the dude that shot up a Colorado Planned Parenthood clinic killing three people and wounding nine others, was apprehended alive and disarmed after a five-hour standoff with police. Just looking at this guy’s picture could make one want to proceed with extreme caution.

James Holmes, the dude that walked into a Colorado movie theater and killed 12 people and wounded 70 others. Holmes was apprehended alive and disarmed. Twelve killed and seventy wounded.

Police choose who gets to live and who gets to die. When it comes to black lives (some of whom are armed and yet far too many who are not), it all too frequently appears that those lives simply do not matter to police. This is why Black Lives Matter exists.
