Watching the Republican National Convention is better than taking a laxative

(©Dr. Diana Beard-Williams, 2016) Give me a break will you please? I have heard it all.....from let us make America GREAT again to the group BLACK LIVES MATTER are responsible for the killings of police officers. Really? What “greatness” are these Republicans chanting about? Was it when we killed off the Native American population, sold black people into a life of slavery and split of families, even forced their men and women to breed with whomever the master desired? Was it the greatness when we have to fight like hell to get the 13th amendment to the constitution or the 1964 Voting Rights Act through. Please do not tell me they are talking about the greatness that came from corporations stealing and pillaging society with their corporate and tax loopholes and people like Michael Milkin causing people to go bankrupt only to re-invent himself as God’s gift to the education world. Now we have schools named after the felon who stole people’s life savings.
Please do not tell me the Republicans have the nerve to parade a black police chief from Wisconsin across the stage to talk about everyone following the law. Excuse me? I guess he has not seen the Rodney King video and hundreds of other videos where black people are literally massacred by the police like Alton Sterling in Louisiana when his hands were held behind his back. Oh please do not tell me that Hillary Clinton is responsible for the death of your son in Benghazi when you have not mentioned one word about how former president George Bush sent many Americans to their deaths over lies about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.
If this Republican Convention is about re-inventing Donald Trump and making him more palatable, I can accept that. But do no spew half truths, total misstatements of truth and then tell a black audience that we need to return to an America that was once great. America is great as long as we are not talking about returning to the years when blacks could not sit at lunch counters, had to ride on the back of the bus, were hung like dolls from trees and had their genitalia cut off as a souvenir. Maybe someone from the Republican Convention needs to go get a picture of Emmett Till and how his mother allowed him to be laid out in his coffin at a young age. Or maybe they want to return to the good old days when the youngest person executed in this country was an African American boy who barely weighed 90 pounds.
Oh they must mean the good old days when white men made their fortunes off of Prohibition and my father who is 99 years old could not drink from a certain water fountain.
Black Lives Matter is not responsible for the deaths of police officers across this country. An entrenched system of racism, cronyism, nepotism and inequality is what the shooting of police officers is all about . Tell me when do police officers ever stand up and tell about the scandals going on in their police departments or out of control cops. They cannot. They would be gunned down themselves in some form or fashion. Scandals rock the police world in Los Angeles like the criminal prosecution of former Los Angeles Police Chief Leroy Baca and his underlings. They lied to grand juries about beatings going on in the jails and other assorted facts. There have been scandals after scandals and some black police chief with a chip on his shoulder from Wisconsin is going to tell me justice should be equal and use part of a quote from Dr Martin Luther King Jr.? Yes, Dr.. King said that but what the man in black face forgot to mention was the rest of the quote where Dr. King spoke about the inequality of justice and the justice system when it came to man of color.
Maybe someone from the Republican Convention needs to go get a picture of Emmitt Till and explain is that the GREAT TIMES IN AMERICA the Republicans are referring to. Maybe the good old days of America being great is when Israel takes billions of dollars from the American citizen to keep the middle east destabilized or Donald Trump can tell Muslims to go to hell and not flinch. Maybe it is the corrupt judicial system where judges and prosecutors devise ways to engage in mass incarceration of black youth.
