Mijente, a self-proclaimed “new political home for Latinx and Chicanx organizing,” has planned to build a 15,000-foot banner wall around the convention. In order to achieve the desired size for the wall, Mijente is teaming up with several other organizations, including Iraq Veterans Against The War, The Other 98%, and The Working Families Party.
This wall is an obvious play on Trump’s promise to build a “great, great wall” across the United States-Mexico border. Trump rolled out the wall proposal at the beginning of his campaign, along with the claim that all Mexican immigrants are criminals and rapists, and it has been one of his main talking points ever since.
On Mijente’s website, the organization’s director Marisa Franco has the perfect response to Trump’s discriminatory rhetoric:
‘In polarized times we need to be building more bridges between us and less walls that divide us. But if Trump is set on building a wall. We’re going to give it to him. But we’ll be walling off his hate. We won’t go quietly as he campaigns to put us back in the closet, back across the border, or to the back of the bus.’
Eva Cardenas of the Ruckus Society is also quoted saying about project:
‘Standing with front-line communities to create a line of defense against Trump’s hate and racism is a national imperative. In Cleveland we’re not just sending a message against Trump, we’re calling on everyone to stand up and take responsibility for the future of this country.’
The “wall” has been funded by an Indiegogo campaign that offers donors the opportunity to either have their name painted on the wall or receive anti-Trump artwork in exchange for their support. The campaign has a goal of raising $15,000, and they are currently less than a thousand dollars away from meeting that goal.
