Arizona Senator Jeff Flake has said he won’t be able to attend the convention due a pressing need to mow his lawn.
Trey Gowdy, of South Carolina, is taking his family on a vacation, and Utah congressional Representative Mia Love is planning a trip to Israel and says she doesn’t believe her attending the RNC would benefit the state of Utah.
However, the best excuse for avoiding the convention has to come from Nebraska Representative Ben Sasse, whose spokesperson compared the event to a dumpster fire.
‘SEN. SASSE WILL NOT BE ATTENDING THE CONVENTION AND WILL INSTEAD TAKE HIS KIDS TO WATCH SOME DUMPSTER FIRES ACROSS THE STATE, ALL OF WHICH ENJOY MORE POPULARITY THAN THE CURRENT FRONT-RUNNERS.’
In addition to various members of Congress, neither of the party’s ex-presidents nor their nominees in 2008 and 2012 will be attending the convention.
It isn’t just the National Convention that Republicans are trying to avoid. They also seem to be taking any excuse to avoid meeting with Trump. Politico reports that one member of Congress even made up a breakfast meeting in order to avoid meeting his party’s nominee.
