Moments after New Jersey Senator Cory Booker gave such a rousing speech at the Democratic National Convention that it immediately evoked questions of whether it might have made him the de facto frontrunner in the 2024 race for President, it became clear that the speech left Donald Trump unnerved. Trump, who had been quiet on his Twitter account throughout the entire convention, tweeted out a direct threat aimed at Booker.
“If Cory Booker is the future of the Democratic Party, they have no future,” began Donald Trump with his usual generic substance-free rhetoric. But then he went on to make a veiled but clear threat: “I know more about Cory than he knows about himself.”
So just what the heck was that supposed to mean? Cory Booker had just finished pointing out what a con artist Donald Trump had been with his failed Atlantic City hotels in Booker’s home state of New Jersey. Was trump implying that he knows secrets about the Senator? Was this a cheap and crass attempt on Trump’s part to play up the far-right and long discredited rumors that Booker is gay? If so, Trump just managed to find a way to sink to a new low in his campaign. In any case, the threatening tweet suggests that Trump was truly scared of how well received Cory Booker’s speech was tonight.
