Club Blu in Fort Myers, Florida was hosting its under 18 night on Sunday when unspeakable tragedy — words we hear all too often — struck yet again. As the night was ending and parents were picking up their kids, shots rang out. As the confusion of what had just happened came to an end, the horror began. Two people were dead and 16 were wounded. The motive behind the shooting is so far unknown, but police do have three in custody.
The shooting was apparently a drive-by:
We did everything we could to make sure these kids were safe,” Club Blu co-owner Cheryl Filardi said, adding that at least eight armed guards were there for security. “There was nothing we could do … a car rolled up and just started shooting.
At least eight armed guards. That’s eight “good guys with guns” all there to protect these kids and still there was nothing they could do to belay the carnage. The club released this statement on their Facebook page:
We are deeply sorry for all involved. We tried to give the teens WHAT WE THOUGHT WAS A SAFE PLACE TO HAVE A GOOD TIME. Ages 12-17. There was armed security as well as full security, inside and out. As the club was closing and parents were picking their children up…..that’s when all this took place. There was nothing more we could of done as you see it was not kids at the party that did this despicable act. Our condolences to all parties involved. PRAY FOR OUR CITY!
The NRA and right-wing nutters are always quick to pull out the “more guns would have prevented this” delusion. That hasn’t been working out for them lately with armed police officers being killed and now a group of kids being mowed down while armed guards stood helpless to do anything.
Because…guns don’t kill people.
