Donald Trump’s acceptance speech was full of pessimism and fear mongering on Thursday night as he made it sounds like the apocalypse has arrived in America, which Maher definitely noticed.
“If you were watching the convention last night you are probably watching now from your panic room,” Maher said to open his show.
“Did you see Donald Trump’s speech?” he asked his audience. “If that had been any darker it would have been shot by the police.”
“It made me nostalgic for the light-hearted remarks of Rudy Giuliani. He used the word ‘violence’ a dozen times, the word ‘murder’ a half-dozen times — and that was just the part about Ted Cruz.”
Indeed, Trump speech was so dark that Maher was even able to compare it to Ronald Reagan’s more uplifting rhetoric to show how far the GOP has fallen.
“If you didn’t see it, to recap: it’s morning in America where the walls are streaked with blood. We are a shining city on a hill where we will make our last stand against the zombies. And ISIS and illegal immigrants are coming to kill us all. Unfortunately there is no one left to save us because Hillary wiped out the police with her email.”
The “it’s morning in America” and “shining city on hill” are both phrases Reagan used in his positive view of America, something Trump clearly ran away from in his own speech.
Maher went on to mock Trump for acting like he is Jesus or Batman and slammed him for not offering any plan for how he intends to end crime and violence.
“Even James Bond villains when they tie you up will tell you their plan a little,” Maher quipped.
