Trump said many times since he won’t be releasing them. First “he had to look into it”, then “he can’t because he’s under audit,” and then when that was proven a lie he just refused to without a given reason.
Now, if these new reports are correct (and there are extremely strong reasons to say they are), we know why he’s been so reluctant. It’s because he’s guilty of tax fraud on more than one occasion, plus he might not even be paying federal taxes at all. But there is even more on top of that.
David Cay Johnston broke the story for the Daily Beast and gave an interview covering it for Democracynow.org, below. In it, David covers a bit of a timeline covering both possibilities with facts to support them.
- In 1984, Donald filed 2 tax appeals. One with New York City, and another with New York State. Donald filed what is known as a Schedule C in one of these cases, which is what a freelance employee files. Hint: Donald has never been a freelance employee of anyone in his life. On it, he reported zero income and $626,000 in expenses with no supporting documentation or receipts. This is defined as tax fraud.
- During the hearing on the 1984 appeal in question, his CPA and lawyer was shown the tax return. His response was “Well that’s my signature, but I didn’t prepare that tax return.” Not only is Trump a fraudster when it comes to the numbers but he also forged his own lawyer’s signature.
- In both of the 1984 appeals, he was hit with penalties of 35 percent and 25 percent. However, the 25 percent one never stuck because nobody could find the original tax return for that penalty.
- These appeals also both show that in 1984, Donald paid NO federal income taxes at all.
Not only did he not pay taxes at all in 1984, but there’s every reason to believe that Donald hasn’t paid any federal income taxes in the 32 years since then as well. This is due to a provision in tax law that he may be fraudulently exploiting, as you’ll see below.
