Bernie Sanders: Walton Family Get Off Welfare!

Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT), fresh off a strong showing in the Iowa caucuses, is hitting the campaign trail in New Hampshire – and hitting the one percent with renewed vigor. He singled out the Walton Family, the oligarchs that own the gargantuan Wal-Mart corporation, for hoarding wealth while paying their employees a pittance, forcing the government to subsidize their poverty wages.
“The major welfare abuser in America is the wealthiest family in America, the Walton family” said Sanders at a rally, using their shady business practices as evidence that the American economy is rigged against the middle class and designed to funnel money to the richest of Americans. The Walton family owns more wealth than 40% of the American population combined. The Wal-Mart Corporation brought in $485 billion in revenue in 2014 – which is more than the GDP of South Africa and a good many other nations around the world, yet only pays their average employee $8.81 an hour, while forcing them to work only 34 hour weeks – translating into a yearly salary of around $15,575, which is much less than the Federal Poverty level of $22,000 a year for a family of four.
Populist champion Bernie Sanders has called for a “revolution” in America to overturn the crippling income inequality in our nation and the overwhelming influence that the mega-wealthy hold over our politics, and he’s absolutely right. The Great Recession oversaw the largest transfer of wealth in human history from the middle class to the wealthy, and, as has been proven time and time again, that wealth has failed to “trickle back down.” Instead, it gets sent to the war chests of Republican politicians who are intent on repressing any attempts to raise the minimum wage or redistribute any of the ill-gotten wealth of the 1% back to the middle class, where it belongs.
