Citizens United is allowing the Richest to buy Politicians and they are spending way more than was spent in 2008.
Democracy 21 president Fred Wertheimer said that the campaign system is now corrupt:
“The 2016 presidential candidates and their individual-candidate Super PACs are wiping out the nation’s anti-corruption candidate contribution limits. In doing so, the presidential candidates and the Super PACs supporting them are creating the kind of system that the Supreme Court has described as an inherently corrupt system.”
It’s absolutely true and it shows why so many Democrats, including President Obama, have called for campaign finance reform and an amendment to overturn Citizens United. We have turned into an oligarchy and Republicans are perfectly happy with it, because they serve corporations, not the American people.
Former President Jimmy Carter is appalled by what is happening to our system and said as much in a radio interview last week:
“It violates the essence of what made America a great country in its political system. Now it’s just an oligarchy, with unlimited political bribery being the essence of getting the nominations for president or to elect the president.”
