After a long afternoon of wrangling Republicans,
House leadership brought a short-term Homeland Security funding bill to
the floor. It failed spectacularly. In a what was supposed to be a 15
minute vote, Boehner held it open as his deputies desperately try to get the hard-liners to switch votes. It did not work, failing 203-224.
The path here was, as usual for Boehner, messy. Here was the reporting leading up to the vote.
GOP leaders are as of Friday afternoon huddling in the
Speaker's office trying to sort out whether they can get enough votes to
approve the measure. House conservatives want to continue fighting to
block the President Barack Obama's actions on immigration and want to go
to conference to work out differences between the House GOP bill and
the Senate Bill passed bill earlier Friday.
After the bill was voted down, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid
(D-NV) called for Boehner to avoid a DHS shutdown by allowing a vote on
the Senate-passed bill that fully funds the department.
"The Republican Congress has shown that it simply cannot govern. Two
months into the Republican Congress, we are already staring a Homeland
Security shutdown square in the face, even as terrorists around the
world threaten to strike America," Reid said in a statement. "Now is the
time to drop the partisan political games and come together to avoid a
Homeland Security shutdown for the good of our country."
Many House Republicans weren't ready to cave yet and pass a yearlong DHS funding bill, as the Republican-led Senate did on Friday morning. As it turned out, many weren't even ready to pass a short-term funding bill.
