Policy choices were easy only in retrospect. The neat world of good
guys and bad guys started coming apart with the Vietnam War.
Today's crises are nothing like the ones of that simple era. Who are
the good guys and bad guys in Syria and in Iraq? In China's diplomacy in
South America? Among the murdered Israeli and Palestinian children and
the children seeking refuge at our southern border?
To the extent that policy options are even partly military, the
American public has no stomach for multiple invasions and occupations.
