A student was talking about living in various places. They lived in Anchorage, Bethel, Emmonak and some other small village. He said, "We live here because it does not cost as much money for a house."
I just had the student read a local newspaper and we saw some housing ads. Houses were $220,000 to 350,000 for houses in Bethel. He talked about living in Bethel and then moving to Emmonak to save money on housing.

so what do these people do for employment in a village of 750, or in Bethel to afford a home priced over 200,000? On the news the other day it says that the middle classed have been out priced of homes in the Seattle area...pretty sad, we middle income folks could not afford to buy our own homes now.
A lot of the housing belongs to the Indian tribe. We have a lot of boarded up houses here. I think natives get a house pretty cheap here. The houses are also small. I bet they are 800 sf or less. Many have lots of kids too.
Jobs: Fishing: Most natives hunt and fish. They also get seals and whale. Some make and sell native crafts as well as walrus ivory carvings. Lots of fur stuff to buy. School is a big employer. Some work for the city, the small airlines and the two stores. Bethel is like Puyallup of old. Lots of fishing, hunting.
Emmonak has a lot of subsistance living. The natives buy a boat and net and fish, get a whale and seals to eat, skin and make clothes.
they get jobs if and when they are available. They often have wood heat with heating oil as backup. They are constantly going to find wood with their snow machines.
It costs 600.00 to fly to Anchorage and back too. To leave here is spendy. People make crafts all winter too, to sell. I think the clinic provides medical care that is based on what you can pay, if you are native. Big issues must go to Anchorage, but that takes about 9 hours to get a medic plane in load the person and get to Anchorage.

Ashley told me that Rana is doing better. She might get out of the hosp today but probably tomorrow. She is in the same room as another baby with the same condition. Sounds like she is stable and doing well.
Now I hope the police catch the crackheads that broke into their house while they were at the hospital. I have not called and talked to anyone because they have enough to deal with.
