Real Time, HBO’s Bill Maher rolled his eyes and mocked the now famous portrait of 2016 GOP presidential front-runner Ben Carson posing with “Jesus in a bathrobe.”
“I know the Constitution says there can be no religious test for holding office,” Maher began. “But, sorry, you can’t get you hands on the nuclear launch codes if you own a painting of yourself with Jesus in a bathrobe.”
“This is a painting that hangs in Ben Carson’s home of him and Jesus apparently enjoying a spa day,” Maher continued. “So, yes, you can believe whatever you want and still run for office, but it’s got to work the other way too. New state unemployment statistics revealed that the fastest way to sink an economy is to vote for Republican candidates.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “North Dakota had the lowest jobless rate in October, 2.8 percent, followed by Nebraska, 2.9 percent. West Virginia had the highest rate, 6.9 percent. In total, 20 states had unemployment rates significantly lower than the U.S. figure of 5.0 percent, 12 states and the District of Columbia had measurably higher rates and 18 states had rates that were not appreciably different from that of the nation.”

The red states are the backbone of the Republican Party, but growing evidence suggests that opposition to ObamaCare expansion is falling apart in the GOP stronghold.

More recently, there was surprising news out of Alabama, as a commission appointed by Republican governor Robert Bentley recommended expansion. Bentley said earlier this month that he is “looking” at the possibility of broadening Medicaid.
“What is going to happen is that support for Medicaid expansion will continue to build,” Secretary of Health and Human Services Sylvia Burwell told Atlanta Magazine in an article published Monday. “You hear the Alabama governor. You’ve heard conversations in Louisiana.”

Why ISIS is bombing: THEY ARE LOSING

On Thursday, one day before terrorists who appear to have been linked to ISIS launched a series of devastating attacks across Paris, President Obama went on ABC and made a comment that now looks pretty bad:
What is true is that from the start, our goal has been first to contain, and we have contained them.
In the wake of Paris, it looked to many like Obama had badly overhyped his administration's efforts against ISIS. At Saturday's Democratic presidential debate, moderator John Dickerson asked Hillary Clinton if the quote meant that the Obama administration's legacy will be "that it underestimated the threat from ISIS."
Obama's comments don't look quite as bad in context. Rather, as PolitiFact points out, Obama was saying that ISIS's territorial expansion in the Middle East has been contained — that, partly as a result of US actions, its march across Syria and Iraq had been halted. That's both a much more modest claim and factually correct.

Republicans are trying to make hay out of a sound bite of President Obama saying ISIL is contained. But as I explained yesterday, the full context of his quote made it quite clear that anyone doing this is being dishonest. He was asked specifically about Iraq and Syria and he was correct in his response. Today I learned that PolitiFact agrees.
Looking back at Obama’s interview where he made this comment, it is quite clear that it’s within a narrowly defined scope: ISIS’s territorial expansion in Iraq and Syria. He did not rule out the potential for a terrorist attack, and he also made it clear that the United States’ anti-ISIS efforts are a work in progress.References or suggestions that Obama claimed ISIS no longer presents an active threat are incorrect.
Experts agree that the President was correct, though his choice of words wasn’t great, given some people’s inability to understand stateless terrorism.

I heard not a peep from them because they were too busy screeching and whining about how Obama’s weakness has made ISIS stronger and allowed the attacks in Paris to happen. This is the Paris located in France, where Obama has nothing to do with anything.Riiiiight, it’s all Obama’s fault.

Two conservative governors are closing their states to Syrian refugees in the wake of the Paris attacks, suggesting that terrorists would try to infiltrate their borders through refugee programs.
“Given the terrible situation in Paris, I’ve directed that we put on hold our efforts to accept new refugees until the U.S. Department of Homeland Security completes a full review of security clearances and procedures,” Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder (R) said in a statement released by his office on Sunday.
Alabama Gov. Richard Bentley (R) followed Snyder’s lead Sunday night. “As your governor, I will not stand complicit to a policy that places the citizens of Alabama in harm’s way,” Bentley said. “I will not place Alabamians at even the slightest, possible risk of an attack on our people.”
According to Buzzfeed, no Syrian refugees have actually been settled in Alabama.
On Sunday, the Obama administration reaffirmed its commitment to take in 10,000 refugees, who are fleeing devastation and death tolls that match the scale of the Paris attacks every day.
But the fearmongering over terrorists posing as refugees has reached a fever pitch after it was discovered that one of the Paris attackers had entered the country as a Syrian refugee.

n the wake of the terrorist attack that killed nine worshipers in Charleston, southern black churches refused to abandon the open door policy of letting anyone into services. Church leaders did this even though it was through this openness that Dylan Roof was able to infiltrate the congregation before opening fire. The message from that bold decision is clear. "You can kill us but you can't scare us or change who we are." Nothing could be a more fitting tribute. As I write this French jets are pounding the ISIS capital of Raqqa and have apparently cut the city off from water and electricity, potentially hurting a population that is renowned for its activists who resist ISIS. I keep hearing calls in the media to strike Raqqa harder but this seems completely crazy given how much internal opposition to ISIS there is.
Without that French bloodlust for reckless freedom, we have nothing and we are nothing. Without a passion for mixing cultures and ideas, we would all be quite boring. Without the protection that other countries have offered refugees, we would not even be a country. In a sense, we are privileged that ISIS stated so clearly that its goal was to divide us and turn us against refugees, because now we know exactly how we can fight back.

Anytime there is an attack on civilians in the post-9/11 West, demagogues immediately blame it on Muslims. They frequently lack evidence, but depend on the blunt force of anti-Muslim bigotry to bolster their accusations.
Actual evidence, on the other hand, shows that less than two percent of terrorist attacks from 2009 to 2013 in the E.U. were religiously motivated. In 2013, just one percent of the 152 terrorist attacks were religious in nature; in 2012, less than three percent of the 219 terrorist attacks were inspired by religion.
The vast majority of terrorist attacks in these years were motivated by ethno-nationalism or separatism. In 2013, 55 percent of terrorist attacks were ethno-nationalist or separatist in nature; in 2012, more than three-quarters (76 percent) of terrorist attacks were inspired by ethno-nationalism or separatism.
These facts, nonetheless, have never stopped the prejudiced pundits from insisting otherwise.

On Tuesday night, Fox Business will host the next debate between the 2016 GOP presidential contenders. All involved are hoping to avoid a repeat of the last such event, the CNBC fiasco which left the moderators embarrassed and the campaigns whining. But while the Republicans have been fretting about the debate format, questions, opening and closing statements, bathroom breaks and even the room temperature, the GOP White House wannabees have a much bigger problem. As a spate of recent analyses once again confirmed, the U.S. economy almost always does better under Democratic presidents.
Going back to Herbert Hoover, the economy grew faster, job creation accelerated, incomes expanded and stock prices jumped higher when a Democrat sat in the Oval Office. And as theNew Democrat Network documented last month, the last four presidencies are no exception (see chart above):
