Sahil Kapur @ Talking Points Memo has listed the mathematical (and other) republican advantages in this upcoming 6th year midterms (February 20, 2014)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Even if the RWNJ's in house had the numbers to indict/impeach, there isn't the 2/3rds needed in the senate to convict.
But the 'elite' GOP leadership does seem to have lost control where it
takes them, so who knows how far the RWNJ's will go with this
Just for the record The GOP survive on scams like
this years long impeachment con job. Without scandals, con jobs, fear
mongering, hate peddling, division, threats, and all the many other low
down tricks; they don't win.
Oil Refinery threatened by rising waters asks Govt for help to stop the damage
In Delaware, severe storms are eroding the shoreline
and affecting homes and businesses up and down the coast — including the
business of an oil refinery. The functioning of the Delaware City
Refining Company property just south of New Castle, a division of PBF
Energy, is threatened by increasing extreme weather. In other words,
climate disruption is hitting the doorstep of its source.
The refinery has tried to get help, submitting an application
with the Coastal Zone Management Act seeking shoreline protections due
to “tidal encroachment” — which is one way of saying sea level rise.
Let me tell you some of the government agencies who are so-called colluding together. How about NASA? We trust them to send our astronauts into space. We trust them to deliver a rover the size of an S.U.V. to the surface of Mars safely and drive it around, sending data and pictures back from Mars to us. You think these people know what they’re talking about? … How about the United States Navy? The commander in chief of our Pacific Command? Is he colluding when he says that? …
MegaDrought - 3 Months of warmest Temperatures recorded. - Global Warming is real
One hundred percent of California is in severe or worse drought. The failure of this Kelvin wave to trigger a strong El Nino means that there is no end in sight to this drought. The liklihood of drought worsening across the southwestern U.S. has gone up because a strong El Nino would likely bring rains from California to Texas. Instead of a warm tropical Pacific pulling the jet stream down, warm water in the subtropics and temperate zones has pushed north in the northern hemisphere. This movement of heat will tend to move the jet stream poleward, leaving California and the southwest in drought.
HOBBY LOBBY WILL GO TO COURT but will not allow their employees the same right.
“I think it’s an interesting confluence here with Hobby Lobby being in the news with that big case, but if that were an employment case where an employee wanted to make a claim, we would never see that case at the Supreme Court because it would be stayed in arbitration,” Colvin said. “So, ironically, Hobby Lobby gets to go to the Supreme Court because they want to challenge this, but their own employees don’t get to go to court.”
According to federal court records, over the years, several employees have filed job discrimination lawsuits against Hobby Lobby claiming age, disability, race, and sex discrimination—which is common for many corporations. But due to the fact that Hobby Lobby avoids lawsuits and the fact that little information about arbitration cases is made public, it’s difficult to evaluate the company’s treatment of its employees beyond its assurances that they are paid above minimum wage and well taken care of.
First, the Democratic coalition is larger than the GOP coalition — Republicans have won just one presidential election since 1988 with more than 50 percent, Bush’s reelection in 2004 … the closest reelection since Woodrow Wilson’s in 1916. Their current House majority is built on pure gerrymandering — House Democrats got half a million more votes than Republicans did in the last election. Republicans can keep up only by keeping Democratic voters down. They cannot compete on a level playing field. Voter suppression, political intimidation, mud-slinging that turns people off to politics completely, these are overwhelmingly Republican weapons of choice, because the two coalitions are not equally balanced. Smaller, off-year electorates favor Republicans. If everyone votes, Democrats win consistently. That’s not a sign of two equally large political coalitions.
Second, the Republicans are more ideologically extreme, dogmatic and uncompromising, as well as being far more reliant on long-range deep-pocket funding to shape the political landscape/battlefield.
Two things stand out about how conservatives talk about economy, Osorio said, based on several years of intensive observation and analysis. First is the “the tendency to compare it to something natural — a body or the weather or moving liquid,” she said, “But the other idea undergirding their worldview, and thus shaping perceptions of poverty, riches, inequality and desirable economic policy is the idea that the economy exists for a specific purpose: to reward the good and punish the bad. It’s a moral arbiter; simply having great riches indicates you deserve them because the economy loves you the best. Thus, it follows that poor people deserve to be poor and we can know this because they’re poor.”
According to Adam Weinstein's story in Gawker today, flesh-eating bacteria in Florida waters, which "cause ulceration and rapid skin decay and is fatal in about 50 percent of people who get it in their bloodstreams," killed almost one person a month last year.
While Florida has warned generally about this deadly danger, which is "naturally occurring and tends to flare up in the summer" when the water gets warmer, it does nothing to actually test its waters for this or any other bacteria:
Ordinary Americans got 36 percent poorer in just a decade.
John Oliver on Americas inept nuclear arms policy
http://www.alternet.org/video/video-john-olivers-hilarious-and-terrifying-rant-about-americas-inept-nuclear-arms-policy
In last night's episode, the British-born funny man suggested Americans do worry more about the 4804 nuclear warheads we currently have stored in rather obsolete, insecure storage facilities in Wyoming, Montana and North Dakota, guarded by imbeciles. "We spend less time worrying about nuclear annihilation than we do about hitting 'Reply All' in an office e-mail," Oliver quipped.
He then chronicles the incredible recent history of jack-ass behavior on the part of those guarding these agents of total destruction. Cheating on tests, drunken episodes, gambling with fake poker, oops we left the door unlocked, dropping a warhead by accident in North Carolina—the near-misses and level of idiocy is staggering.
Instead of firing, Siegel has had to hire more people. Since his employees were finally able to get reasonably-priced health insurance, he was free to invest his money in all kinds of things. He bought the Orlando Predators. He also bought a massive hotel/casino in Las Vegas. Saints be praised, he was even able to finally start work again on his gaudy, 90,000 square foot house complete with a bowling alley, a 30-car garage, and a roller-skating rink.
Turns out that he never had any intention to flee to the Caribbean.
Turns out Obama has been great for him.
Turns out he was just another rich, entitled a$$hole.
On the 50th anniversary of the assassination, historian Darwin Payne, who was a journalist in Dallas in 1963, said, “You could feel it in the air. When I hear some people express hatred for Obama, it feels the same. But I never have felt we are on the verge of anything like the events I witnessed back then.” Let’s hope he’s right. There are a whole lot of people with a political ax to grind who are wandering around our streets armed to the teeth. As Mrs. Doyle said in her letter, “These people are crazy, or crazed, and I’m sure that we must realize that their actions in the future are unpredictable.”
Michael Moore - Wealth - He earned his wealth, nothing wrong with that.
http://blog.workingamerica.org/2014/07/23/what-the-today-show-totally-missed-with-its-coverage-of-michael-moores-wealth/
First of all, someone with a blue collar upbringing can most certainly attain great wealth over the course of their life and still maintain the composure, sensibility, and ideals they were raised with. That’s common sense. It’s called economic mobility, and it is something that Americans have felt great pride in throughout our history.
But let’s make something else abundantly clear: Michael Moore and other critics of our economic system do not oppose wealth.
Policy choices were easy only in retrospect. The neat world of good guys and bad guys started coming apart with the Vietnam War.
Today's crises are nothing like the ones of that simple era. Who are the good guys and bad guys in Syria and in Iraq? In China's diplomacy in South America? Among the murdered Israeli and Palestinian children and the children seeking refuge at our southern border?
To the extent that policy options are even partly military, the American public has no stomach for multiple invasions and occupations.
Right Wing Christians tell kids CONVERT OR GO TO HELL. Right Wing then accuse liberals of indoctrination
I think I know where conservatives get the idea that other people are sneaking around trying to indoctrinate children into unthinking ideologies. It’s because they themselves are totally guilty of it, both in terms of trying to recruit other people’s children and trying to frighten their own children about the dangers of exploring thoughts outside of the ones approved by their own rigid ideologies. Parents in Portland, Oregon were alarmed to hear that a group calling itself the Child Evangelism Fellowship's Good News Club has been targeting children as young as five for conversion to their form of Christianity.
The group pretends to be similar to more liberal and open-minded groups, claiming they are just trying to teach their beliefs but aren’t trying to be coercive. However, it’s hard to believe, in no small part because they admit they run around scaring children by telling them they are “sinners” who are hellbound unless they convert and start trying to convert others.
Three months after the standoff at the Cliven Bundy ranch, the Southern Poverty Law Center has issued a report—” War in the West: The Bundy Ranch Standoff and the American Radical Right“—stating what should have been obvious at the time, but which most media coverage utterly obscured: The standoff was not some quirky, standalone event that spontaneously just happened out of the blue. Rather, it was a highly coordinated event reflecting the threat of a larger militia movement, which in turn has drawn together multiple threads of far-right ideology over the course of the last 40 years.
By deploying a thousand National Guardsmen to the U.S.-Mexico border, Perry has shown that as President he would be “ready and willing” to use troops without a defined objective, mission, or exit strategy, the aide confirmed.
“Sending troops someplace with no clear idea of why they are going or what they are supposed to be doing once they get there is a key part of the Presidential skill set,” said the aide, Harland Dorrinson. “Rick Perry has just shown that he’s got that nailed down.”
Obamacare is working in Alaska: A Doctor talks.
http://www.adn.com/article/20140720/see-through-smoke-and-youll-see-obamacare-working
First, let’s examine the issue of how many people have health insurance. In Alaska, more than 7,000 people got new health insurance plans. That’s part of a national trend that has increased the number and percentage of Americans who have health coverage. In fact, we have reduced the percentage of uninsured individuals from 20 percent to 15 percent, a major expansion in health coverage.
Many of these health plans have new provisions, like guaranteed coverage of preventive care, maternity care and hospital care. According to surveys, 78 percent of individuals with health plans are happy with them, including 74 percent of Republicans. In the past, many of us have been frustrated with insurance companies that canceled coverage when enrollees got sick or that denied essential care. It is very positive to see that more people are enrolled and that people like the care they’re getting.
This improvement in health coverage — more people with better plans — is improving our quality of life. According to surveys, 58 percent of people say they’re better off since the roll out of improved health plans, while only 9 percent are worse off.
A 12 Year Old Girl writes to Sarah Palin - Well worth reading
http://samuel-warde.com/2014/06/sarah-palin-let-tell-see-house/
You tweeted on Monday, “Look who fired the 1st shot in the real ‘war on women. Hint: it wasn’t the GOP. See this excerpt from Hillary’s book.” The excerpt from Hilary Clinton’s book describes a situation in which she felt uncomfortable making a statement questioning the legitimacy of your selection as John McCain’s running mate as an attempt to use a woman to appeal to women voters. Really? You think this was the “first shot” in the war on women? You don’t think women have had to fight for every right we currently have, every opportunity we have? You don’t think women must continue to fight for these rights and opportunities which are constantly under attack? Well, let me tell you what I see from my house, Sarah. You’re the one who is fighting a war here, not just on women but on justice, enlightenment, and freedom.
Though Shall praise the economics of Ayn Rand AND IGNORE that she was an athiest.
Though Shall praise the economics of Ayn Rand AND IGNORE that she was an athiest.
based on what the GOP stands for, I present to you the Republican Ten Commandments:
- Thou shalt worship no other Americans but Ronald Reagan.
- Thou shalt pay no attention to the fact that tax rates have nothing to do with capitalism. Remember, we were in fact a nation based on socialism before 1980 when our savior was elected.
- To speak ill of Ronald Reagan means you are not a real conservative.
- Thou shalt honor Ayn Rand’s economic ideologies, but ignore the fact that she was an atheist who thought religious people were fools.
You've got nothing more pressing to do than sue a president who was elected twice by the majority of voting Americans?
If you committed a crime in full view of a police officer, you could expect to be arrested — particularly if you persisted in your criminality after being told to cut it out, and if your crime were hurting the people around you.
But the same is not true for those other “people” who inhabit the U.S.: corporations. Polluting companies commit their crimes with aplomb. An investigation by the Crime Report, a nonprofit focused on criminal justice issues, has revealed the sickening levels of environmental criminality that BP, Mobil, Tyson Fresh, and other huge companies can sink to without fear of meaningful prosecution:
More than 64,000 facilities are currently listed in [EPA] databases as being in violation of federal environmental laws, but in most years, fewer than one-half of one percent of violations trigger criminal investigations, according to EPA records. …
Immigration Reform: Killed by the For Profit Corporate Prison Lobby
It is no longer what is best for our country, it is what is going to make money for the 1% wealthiest.
The owners of the for-profit corporate prison system and their lobbyists have more power than all the human rights forces combined. Overcoming the pro-incarceration, anti-immigrant lobby that thrives on government enforcement of the racially motivated U.S. immigration system is key to stopping the mass arrests, incarcerations, and deportations of hardworking immigrants. To overcome that lobby, pro-human rights, pro-immigrants forces need to convince the local, public institutions that finance for-profit corporate prisons to divest from the prison industrial complex and invest their (and the publics) money in something else.
Is Monsanto's ROUNDUP causing a fatal liver epidemic?
At this point, this elegant theory advanced by Dr. Jayasumana and colleagues can only be considered hypothesis-generating. Further scientific studies will need to confirm the hypothesis that CKDu is indeed due to glyphosate-heavy metal toxicity to the kidney tubules. For the present, this may be the best explanation for the epidemic.
Another explanation is that heat stress may be the cause, or a combination of heat stress and chemical toxicity. Monsanto, of course, is standing behind glyphosate and disputing the claim that it plays any role whatsoever in the genesis of CKDu.
While the exact cause of CKDu has not been proven conclusively, both Sri Lanka and El Salvador have invoked the precautionary principle. El Salvador banned glyphosate in September 2013 and is currently looking for safer alternatives. Sri Lanka banned glyphosate in March of this year because of concerns about CKDu.
Ignorance and Apathy are guiding gun laws.
http://m.nwitimes.com/news/opinion/columnists/guest-commentary/young-voices-ignorance-apathy-are-steering-gun-control-efforts/article_4e0d44a8-23fa-5fca-8417-b48ecd4d2a8d.html?mobile_touch=true
School shootings are not like the flu. They aren’t spread from touch to touch. However, if you treat them as such, then you must educate and raise awareness -- as you would to battle the flu -- to abolish gun violence. Neither apathy nor ignorance will do.
I'm not here to preach to you about gun laws, and I'm not here to say you should have your firearms taken away. For argument's sake, that would be taking away your God-given right to bear arms. However, in my short time on this Earth, I’ve come to realize, as have many others, that there is no need for automatic weapons or guns with high capacity magazines to be readily available. In fact, I don’t think there should be any need for guns with military-like additions or high capacity clips in daily life.
What sickens me is the total lack of a solution being reached here. Whether Americans are in denial or treating this as the norm, it’s wrong. Mass shootings and school shootings can be stopped. However, until everyone wakes up, this will now be a valid fear of students all over the country.
My fears used to be failing a geometry test. Now I have to fear a fellow adolescent firing off a round between third and fourth period. There needs to be a solution.
5 Ways to REFORM THE SUPREME COURT Bill Moyers
http://billmoyers.com/2014/07/15/its-time-to-reform-the-supreme-court-here-are-five-ways-to-do-it/
The just-completed Supreme Court term was filled with deeply disturbing decisions. In Plumhoff v. Rickard, the Court held that police can shoot at a car in a high speed chase to get it to stop — and continue to shoot until it stops — even when the basis for initially stopping the car was no more than a burnt out headlight. In McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission, the Court struck down limits on the total amount that a person can contribute to candidates for federal office or political parties over a two-year period. In McCullen v. Coakley, the Court declared a Massachusetts law creating a 35-foot buffer zone around reproductive health care facilities unconstitutional, thus leaving women seeking care without adequate protection against harassment and putting in jeopardy laws creating buffer zones around military funerals, cemeteries, and places of worship. In Town of Greece v. Galloway, the Court ruled that it is constitutional for a town board to have Christian clergy recite explicitly Christian prayers before its meetings. And in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby, the Court held for the first time that for-profit companies have a right to the free exercise of religion and may use it to deny women insurance coverage for contraceptives.
Can you say Gridlock plus. The GOP are great at wasting time and our money and then blame it on our President.
None of these geniuses appears to realize all their barking, carping and mooning are frustrating the president's attempt to address the "crisis" that is agitating them so fiercely. Or more likely, they know exactly what they're doing -- and the point, as usual, is to embarrass Obama.
But not every Republican talks total nonsense about the border and immigration. Alfonso Aguilar, who headed the Office of Citizenship under Bush, recently wrote: "Contrary to the narrative of some opportunistic politicians and pundits, this unfortunate situation is not the result of the Obama administration failing to enforce the law. In reality, most would-be-migrants believe that crossing the border has become much more difficult, and in the last decade, the U.S. government has greatly strengthened border security and interior enforcement."
Democrats, independents and even many rank-and-file Republicans want a more decent and constructive policy. Ultimately, voters must grasp that the GOP is the greatest single obstacle to every vital reform. That day cannot come too soon.
Reminder: The policy which has the Crazies upset is a GW Bush Policy. President Obama is just doing the job required by the GW Bush regulations.
“What is accomplished by a picket line of armed volunteers threatening to shoot unarmed, half-starved and thirsty children?” Vanderboegh said. “I agree that the invasion is devilish in its conception, carried out by collectivists who could give a shit less about how many kids die along the way...
one of Davis’ allies insisted the militia groups would work to assist law enforcement, although Davis himself urged them to “start the next 1776 right there on the border” if they were confronted by law enforcement authorities.
Miami is being swallowed up by Global Warming Sea Rise Water
http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2014/07/11/miami-will-be-swallowed-as-sea-levels-rise-but-the-climate-change-deniers-who-run-it-look-the-other-way/
Miami has streets with water constantly but the media does not mention it. Global Warming is real!
“There has been a rise of about 10 inches in sea levels since the 19th century – brought about by humanity’s heating of the planet through its industrial practices – and that is now bringing chaos to Miami Beach by regularly flooding places like Alton Road,” says Harold Wanless, a geology professor at Miami University. “And it is going to get worse. By the end of this century we could easily have a rise of six feet, possibly 10 feet. Nothing much will survive that. Most of the land here is less than 10 feet above sea level.”
Thus one of the great cities of the world faces obliteration in the coming decades. “It is over for south Florida. It is as simple as that. Nor is it on its own,” Wanless admits.
“The next two or three feet of sea-level rise that we get will do away with just about every barrier island we have across the planet. Then, when rises get to four-to-six feet, all the world’s great river deltas will disappear and with them the great stretches of agricultural land that surrounds them. People still have their heads in the sand about this but it is coming. Miami is just the start. It is worth watching just for that reason alone. It is a major US city and it is going to let itself drown.”
Russia and Putin losing prestige with other countries after the Ukraine invasion.
As the European Union considers further sanctions on Russia for its role in the standoff in Ukraine, Russia is broadly unpopular in many countries around the globe and increasingly disliked in Europe and the United States. President Vladimir Putin’s leadership also continues to inspire little confidence worldwide, according to a new Pew Research Center survey.
The former Cold War power’s negative global image
contradicts Russians’ expectations that Putin’s actions in Ukraine
would improve their country’s international reputation.
It also contradicts the line from American conservatives who
believe Putin is a great leader and strategic mastermind, positioning
Russia as a global leader on the international stage. For all the
Republicans inclined to draw hearts on their Putin photos, the Pew
Research Center found Russia’s reputation deteriorating practically
everywhere on the planet.
CNN Host shows Texas Councilwoman for the heartless witch she is re: Child Immigrants.
http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2014/07/10/cnn-host-destroys-texas-councilwoman-on-live-tv-for-heartless-ban-on-immigrants/
CNN host Ashleigh Banfield on Thursday eviscerated a Texas councilwoman who spearheaded the effort to ban undocumented immigrant children from entering her city.
Earlier this week, League City became the first Texas town to pass a resolution that would deny any request to assist the federal government in the ongoing immigration crisis, and specifically ruled out detention centers for children inside the city limits.
But when Council Member Heidi Thiess agreed to discuss the resolution she authored on CNN Thursday, she probably did not expect to be shamed on live television.
“Do you see how those who are your critics say that is just heartless?” Banfield asked. “We’ve got kids being raped in overcrowded detention facilities. They need help. These are people who are desperate, and they need help. And, effectively, your critics say you’re just turning your backs on them.”
CNN host Ashleigh Banfield on Thursday eviscerated a Texas councilwoman who spearheaded the effort to ban undocumented immigrant children from entering her city.
Earlier this week, League City became the first Texas town to pass a resolution that would deny any request to assist the federal government in the ongoing immigration crisis, and specifically ruled out detention centers for children inside the city limits.
But when Council Member Heidi Thiess agreed to discuss the resolution she authored on CNN Thursday, she probably did not expect to be shamed on live television.
“Do you see how those who are your critics say that is just heartless?” Banfield asked. “We’ve got kids being raped in overcrowded detention facilities. They need help. These are people who are desperate, and they need help. And, effectively, your critics say you’re just turning your backs on them.”
I feel sorry for you. I truly do. It must be terribly frustrating to be so irrelevant. To have your rabble-rousing, race-baiting drivel limited to Fox's Sean Hannity Show in your desperate, pathetic, never-ending quest for attention. You are, put simply, one of the most ignorant, misogynistic, homophobic, xenophobic, hate-filled, polarizing individuals ever hit the national political stage (thank you John McCain).
Your new video, in which you call for President Obama's impeachment because of his "lawlessness," is an unconscionable, unpatriotic piece of garbage....
6 Things to know about Global Warming
http://billmoyers.com/2014/06/12/six-things-michael-mann-wants-you-to-know-about-the-science-of-global-warming/
There is nothing controversial about the work of climatologist Michael Mann, director of Penn State’s Earth System Science Center. His innovative research helped recreate the Earth’s historical temperature record and separate the noise of natural weather fluctuations from the steady signal of real climate change. As such, Mann has played a significant role in the development of the overwhelming scientific consensus – the planet is warming and human activities are responsible.
Rushing in to eat after a pride kill, he got his head stuck in a dead buffalo's butt, according to the YouTube description.
While the video above from Kruger National Park in South Africa shows several minutes of the cub's struggle to get free as the grown females appear to ignore the situation, the lionesses eventually took action, Uproxx reported. The poster wrote that rangers kept an eye on the little guy during the night and "the adult lions (all female) had eaten through the stomach to free the cub! RNC Chair Lies about wait times for ER care in California. (Reince says it is 5 hours - not close to the truth)
http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2014/jul/08/reince-priebus/rnc-chair-reince-priebus-thanks-barack-obama-five-/
The Republicans are really hurting if they are resorting to blatant lies like this.
What does 'average E.R. wait' mean?
Actually, there isn’t just one definition. A study published in October 2013 by the California Health Care Foundation offered three different measurements. The one Priebus references is "patient arrival to being admitted to hospital as inpatient." For California, this wait was five hours and 26 minutes -- longer than the national average of four hours and 34 minutes.
But this is by far the longest of the three measures. The second longest is "patient arrival to emergency room departure for discharged patients" -- basically, the entire length of the visit for someone who isn’t actually admitted as an inpatient after being seen by the E.R. For Californians, this wait time was two hours and 49 minutes, once again a bit higher than the national average of two hours and 19 minutes.
The third measurement is by far the shortest -- "patient arrival to being seen by health care professional." In California, this was 31 minutes, slightly more than the national average of 29 minutes.
One might take away from Priebus’ tweet that someone going to a California E.R. can expect a wait of more than five hours just to get in to see a doctor or a nurse. In reality, they’re seeing a health professional in about a half an hour -- and if their injury or illness isn’t serious enough to keep them in the hospital overnight, then they’re on their way home in under three hours. For those patients, their entire visit is much shorter than the five hours Priebus indicates.
HOBBY LOBBY Sex, Lies and Craft Supplies
http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2014/07/02/hobby-lobby-sex-lies-and-craft-supplies.html
No, this is a victory for corporate greed digging its claws into whatever façade of a rationalization it can get within its grasp. Don’t listen to me, listen to Richard Cizik of the National Association of Evangelicals: “When anyone can use religion to claim an exemption on anything, religion loses meaning. Rather than a personal belief embedded in our souls, faith would become a set of arbitrary rules any corporation could choose from to skirt the law.”
Moreover, Cizik warns, this “puts government in charge of deciding what is or isn’t religion.” That doesn’t sound very free, does it?
If I were the religious faithful, I would be fairly annoyed at 90 percent of corporate America chomping at the bit to use my deeply held values as an excuse for their own misdeeds. Also, while the Bible does not take a firm position on abortion or when life begins, Jesus is pretty clear on one point: “You cannot serve both God and money” (Luke 16:13 and Matthew 6:24).
5 examples showing the differences of liberals vs conservatives on religious freedom
http://www.forwardprogressives.com/5-examples-showing-difference-liberals-conservatives-religious-freedom/
Liberals: Abortion: A woman and her doctor make the decision about an abortion.
Conservatives: Once pregnant, the woman must carry the baby to term. (A few have exceptions but many do not allow for exceptions for incest or rape type situations.)
Liberals: Abortion: A woman and her doctor make the decision about an abortion.
Conservatives: Once pregnant, the woman must carry the baby to term. (A few have exceptions but many do not allow for exceptions for incest or rape type situations.)
Conservatives: Under
their system of beliefs, abortion would be completely banned. No woman
would have the right to have control over her own body. The moment she
became pregnant she would lose almost all control she has over what
happens to her body over the following 9 months. Under their belief
system, every single American woman would be forced to adhere to the
religious beliefs of a certain percentage of the population whether they
shared those views or not. - See more at:
Guns: An Englishman speaks about US Gun craziness
http://www.liberalamerica.org/2014/07/05/british-guy-america-gun-culture/
Re: School Shootings
“To reasonable Americans it’s horrifying. After the Port Arthur shooting, Australians stood up and said, “This is not worth the lives of children.” After Dunblane, the UK stood up and said, “This is not worth the lives of children.” After the *endless* stream of school shootings in America, Americans have stood up and said, “This is not worth the lives of children” — and the NRA (the lobbying arm of America’s arms industry) has responded, “SURE it is!”
Then the US cannot claim to be any kind of democracy. If the majority of people want things tightened, but a lobbying group is more powerful than the people, its wrong on so many levels. From the outside, it seems you are going backwards, we abolish the death penalty, you kill more, we tighten gun controls, you after each shooting seem to loosen them. Concealed carry? Open Carry? OMG, this is like the 3rd world ….. The US started so far ahead, a clean slate, a fresh start and you are going backwards. I am sure sometime soon, I will read someone has been burned at the stake for believing in Evolution, not creation.
How does the rest of the western world manage without guns to make them more FREE and manly! Everyone I see who is carrying a gun or shoots people in the US, looks like he has one friend and he is imaginary!
The constant cry from the Gun Lobby is that you can’t get rid of guns as the bad guys will always have them. Well, let’s look at that. Australia had very similar very lax gun control laws, it also prided itself on its pioneer spirit and freedom, the right to own a gun was part and parcel of that. I was living in Clare in South Australia at the time of the Port Arthur mass shooting. [In 1996, in Port Arthur, Australia, 35 people were killed and another 23 were injured by a lone gunman who used two semi-automatic weapons to unleash a reign of terror on the small city] I saw how Australians reacted to this. Port Arthur is part of South Australia. Australia has states, with state parliament’s and a central federal government, much like the US. A 28-year-old, who was described as having “significant intellectual disabilities,” was eventually caught and convicted of the crime. In the aftermath of this mass killing, the Australian government took bold and immediate steps to put in place gun control regulations. since then their gun regulations have got even tighter. Their gun deaths are now on a par with most European countries.
As a result, British Columbia’s per capita greenhouse gas emissions
are now nearly 20 percent below the rest of Canada’s. This put the
province “within spitting distance” of its goal to reduce emissions 6
percent below 2007 levels by 2012 a year ahead of schedule, says Mary
Polak, B.C.’s minister of the environment.
Sustainable Prosperity, a research and policy institute that measured the tax’s impacts, reported that the policy reduced fuel consumption seven times more than if the price of gas had naturally increased by the same amount due to market fluctuations. The tax drove consumption down not just by pushing gas prices up, but also by raising awareness about why we need to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
All that happened in the span of just five years.
Victor Greer, 46, of Reading, Pa., was pulled over about 1:15 a.m. while driving the wrong way down a one-way street — he was headed north on Seventh Ave. near Grove St., police said.
Inside his vehicle, cops found a .9-mm pistol, a pump-action shotgun and a box of ammo in addition to the AR-15 rifles — a high-powered killing machine that has been used in some of America's recent mass killings.
His suicide note read: “I want to die in combat, so I can go to heaven and meet God,” according to police.
Why the HOBBY LOBBY decision should scare you.
http://egbertowillies.com/2014/07/05/supreme-court-hobby-lobby/
Do you really want your boss to have the right to make your medical decisions? He takes the place of your Doctor? Is that what you want?
According to the Supreme Court – the owner’s religious beliefs trump all. For 52% of working Americans, they should be terrified, because what seemed so far-fetched is not anymore. Let’s be clear, this is about company’s rights over worker’s rights.
Finally, I saw on a post someone said if you owned a company wouldn’t you want to be able to run it by your religious beliefs and not have to compromise them. If I ran a for-profit company I would want to honor my beliefs, and the legal system that has not allowed religious discrimination (until now), honor my employee’s rights to their own religious beliefs, and keep my expectations to a professional manner that attracts the most talented employees, provides a respectful environment and makes customers feel valued. If you own a for-profit company not founded for religious purposes, your religion is yours, forcing it on your other 10 or 10,000 employees is not what our founding fathers ever intended – it is actually quite the opposite.
Hospice Care and Corporations: A money maker, good info if you are looking at Hospice
From a mission of mercy, hospice has evolved into a $14 billion industry, increasingly run by corporate chains, and nobody gets more credit, or blame, than the Reverend Hugh Westbrook. He invented the very idea of the corporate hospice, when he and a couple of partners opened the first for-profit program, in Dallas, in 1984—right after the Medicare law he was instrumental in crafting began to pay for hospice services. Over the next two decades, he grew the company into VITAS Innovative Hospice Care, the largest hospice chain in the United States—or anywhere, for that matter, because hospice chains do not exist abroad. In the process, Westbrook proved the unthinkable: A business can make a fortune caring for dying people.
Certainly he did. He had yachts, a Florida beachfront mansion, and a mountain home in North Carolina.
A dozen facts about Conservatives they DO NOT want you to know.
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2014/07/04/1311570/-Independence-Day-Special-A-Dozen-Facts-About-America-Conservatives-Would-Like-You-to-Forget?detail=facebook
1. Conservatives opposed the Founding Fathers, the American Revolution and a lot of other righteous stuff.
2. The United States is not a Christian nation, and the Bible is not the cornerstone of our law.
Why Working Families Need Unions! Unions are more important than ever.
http://www.alternet.org/labor/you-celebrate-4th-remember-why-americas-working-families-need-unions-stay-strong?akid=11986.294211.1CR1Og&rd=1&src=newsletter1009459&t=13
As you celebrate with your loved ones over the holiday, remember how unions have helped American families secure prosperity and opportunity, and why we should consider unions a basic form of democracy.
The decline of the American labor movement, now representing just 12 percent of the workforce, and the corresponding increase in inequality hurts working families. Whether a home health aide, teacher, electrician, or autoworker, you are less likely to have a voice at work. This means lower wages, fewer benefits, and less ability to care for your family. It also means less democracy in our country.
Open Carry Gun In Store: LEAVE IMMEDIATELY,
http://www.pqed.org/2014/06/how-should-people-respond-to-open-carry.html?m=1
My proposal is as follows: we should all leave. Immediately. Leave the food on the table in the restaurant. Leave the groceries in the cart, in the aisle. Stop talking or engaging in the exchange. Just leave, unceremoniously, and fast.
But here is the key part: don’t pay. Stopping to pay in the presence of a person with a gun means risking your and your loved ones’ lives; money shouldn’t trump this. It doesn’t matter if you ate the meal. It doesn’t matter if you’ve just received food from the deli counter that can’t be resold. It doesn’t matter if you just got a haircut. Leave. If the business loses money, so be it. They can make the activists pay.
the real costs of the decision. Women's reproductive rights are compromised. The religious freedom of employees for these corporations is compromised. The sanctity of our religious institutions is also compromised. To protect religious pluralism and freedom of the individual we need clear demarcations between what is spiritual and what is economical. Otherwise, we sacrifice the soul of American religion and all that makes it good and why I study it on the altar of industry.
Corporations may crumble because of Hobby Lobby! It changes the definition of a Corporation dramatically.
Here's one more reason to worry about the Supreme Court's Hobby Lobby decision, which allowed the arts and crafts chain to block insurance coverage of contraception for female employees because of the owners' religious objections: It could screw up corporate law.
This gets complicated, but bear with us. Basically, what you need to know is that if you and some friends start a company that makes a lot of money, you'll be rich, but if it incurs a lot of debt and fails, you won't be left to pay its bills. The Supreme Court affirmed this arrangement in a 2001 case, Cedric Kushner Promotions vs. Don King:
That separation is what legal and business scholars call the "corporate
veil," and it's fundamental to the entire operation. Now, thanks to the
Hobby Lobby case, it's in question.
linguistically speaking, the employee and the corporation are different “persons,” even where the employee is the corporation’s sole owner. After all, incorporation’s basic purpose is to create a distinct legal entity, with legal rights, obligations, powers, and privileges different from those of the natural individuals who created it, who own it, or whom it employs.
Woefully Underfunding the IRS: Consequences? Lower Tax Revenues.
http://www.taxjusticeblog.org/archive/2014/07/the_consequences_of_woefully_u.php#.U7VrsqiT5wl
Following up on their efforts to enact dramatic cuts to the IRS's funding last year, Republican members of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services voted to slash IRS funding by $341 million, pushing the agency's budget to its lowest level in more than five years. What makes these proposed spending cuts so ridiculous is that every dollar invested in the IRS’s enforcement, modernization and management system reduces the federal budget deficit by $200 and every dollar the IRS “spends for audits, liens and seizing property from tax cheats” garners ten dollars back. From fiscal year 2010 to 2014, the IRS has seen its overall funding cut by as much as 14 percent
Because the IRS's job is to collect taxes that pay for the rest of the government, it is unique in that cuts to its budget have the effect of substantially increasing the deficit. In fact, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) found that the 14 percent reduction in enforcement personnel from fiscal year (FY) 2010 to 2012 forced by budget cuts resulted in a loss of $7.6 billion in revenue in FY 2012 alone.
Corporate Tax Avoidance - The New Normal, Billions taken -Bye.
Gabriel Zucman – a student of Thomas Piketty – analyzed data on U.S. international transactions from the Bureau of Economic Analysis to document just how extensive tax avoidance by U.S. companies has become. He finds that U.S. multinationals attribute 55 percent of their foreign profits to six tax havens. Today, close to 20 percent of all U.S. corporate profits – domestic as well as foreign – are squirreled away in these countries, up from about 2 percent in 1984. This is a tenfold increase in the use of tax havens over the last three decades. The effective tax rate on U.S. multinationals has fallen dramatically as a result, saving them a total of $200 billion in 2013 alone in avoided tax payments to the governments of the U.S. and other countries.
It’s unclear where this will end if Congress doesn’t act soon to close the loopholes that enable multinational corporations to avoid paying profits taxes in the U.S. Covidien was a U.S. company until it moved its headquarters to Ireland five years ago while maintaining most of its operations in Massachusetts.
What does Jesus want with your Vagina? The Religious Right need to control your sex life.
http://www.alternet.org/belief/what-does-jesus-want-your-vagina-christian-rights-mission-control-americans-sex-lives
Monday’s Supreme Court decision in Burrell v Hobby
Lobby was a blow against consumer protection, worker’s rights, and the
religious liberty of employees who want their medical care to be free of
what their boss thinks Jesus wants for their vagina. But it should be
read as something else, as well: The end of the illusion that the
anti-choice movement is about “life”, when in fact they are nothing more
than a 21st century anti-sex league
it’s becoming increasingly fashionable on the right to portray women as inherently asexual beings who are being tricked by all this contraception into thinking they have to have sex, which allows them to argue that depriving women of reproductive rights is doing women a favor, by giving them an excuse to get out of that icky sex.
This argument has, by and large, not had much exposure to the general public and stayed within right wing circles, though Ross Douthat occasionally flexes the evils-of-contraception muscle
in the New York Times. The Hobby Lobby decision, however, has forced
the issue of contraception right into the mainstream, no doubt
surprising many Americans who had no idea that there was anyone who
opposed contraception, much less that there’s widespread antagonism
against it when it comes to the Christian right. Hopefully, people will
remember the lesson that this is not about “life” or “religion”, but
strictly about the Christian right wanting to control female sexuality
and punish women for having premarital sex ( about 95 percent of women) or for having non-procreative sex ( about 99 percent of women).
Guns: 10 States most likely and least likely to KILL People.
But blue states are far safer than red states, according new analyses of the most recent data. That’s because states with the most gun controls, which are almost all blue, tend to have fewer gun owners and fewer guns used in suicides, crime and domestic disputes.
Nearly two-thirds of all gun deaths are suicides. There, states with the highest gun ownership rates and loosest laws have the highest percentages of deaths this way.
Women and Minorities are less than full citizens according to this weeks Supreme Court Rulings.
http://www.alternet.org/scotus-reactionary-decision-harris-v-quinn-new-version-infamous-dred-scott-decision
The court’s rationale in Harris, that the workers that
provide essential services to the frail and elderly, a population set to
explode as the Baby Boom ages, aren’t “full” public employees is best
understood in the context of two other seminal moments when U.S. law
makers stacked the deck for employers and against people of color and
women trying to improve their lot in life by forming strong unions.
In 1935, the National Labor Relations Act, NLRA, the law
which created the architecture for workers to form unions, passed the
U.S. Congress. But in order to win enough votes for passage, Roosevelt
and the laws proponents compromised with racist southern elements who
demanded that domestic and agricultural workers, the two occupations
dominated by Blacks and women, would be excluded from the provisions of
the NLRA, thus condemning people of color and women to a second class
status under our nation’s first national labor law. Essentially, white
men in factories were given the right to form strong unions while people
of color and women were formally held back.
RAPE: Target of the George Will Column speaks about her rape
http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2014/07/02/target-of-george-will-column-shames-him-on-cnn-rape-isnt-a-privilege-for-anybody/
Lisa Sendrow, the survivor of sexual assault who George Will recently claimed was using her rape to get a “coveted status,” said on Wednesday that his “grotesque” Washington Post column could trigger traumatic reactions in other survivors.
In a piece early last month, Will used Sendrow’s rape to make his point about “the supposed campus epidemic of rape, a.k.a. ‘sexual assault.’”
Will asserted that when universities “make victimhood a coveted status that confers privileges, victims proliferate.”
“He made so many grotesque remarks about sexual assault,” Sendrow told CNN’s Kate Bolduan on Wednesday.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists President John C. Jennings released the following statements re: HOBBY LOBBY
http://www.acog.org/About-ACOG/News-Room/News-Releases/2014/ACOG-Statement-on-the-Supreme-Court-Decision-on-Hobby-Lobby-v-Sebelius
“The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (the College) is profoundly disappointed in today’s Supreme Court decision, which allows employers to impose their religious views on their female employees’ health care.
“This decision inappropriately allows employers to interfere in women’s health care decisions. All health care decisions – including decisions about contraception – should be made by a woman and her doctor, based on the patient’s needs and her current health. Her employer’s religious beliefs should not overrule her doctor’s advice.
