Bad Lip Reading: 1st Democratic Debate. Very Good

Why the GOP tax plans won't work.

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/10/31/opinion/why-the-republican-tax-plans-wont-work.html?smid=fb-share&_r=0

The Republican presidential candidates were full of tax talk at this week’s debate. But none has a tax plan coherent enough to be the basis of a substantive discussion, let alone one that could meet the nation’s challenges.
Take, for example, the issue of how much revenue any plan would raise or lose. All of the Republican plans focus on tax cuts, so losses are all but inevitable. Quick-and-dirty calculations of proposals from Jeb Bush, Donald Trump, Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz show red ink running into the trillions of dollars.
Yet the candidates assert, against historical evidence, that revenue losses from tax cuts will be offset by economic growth. Ted Cruz invoked the Reagan-era tax cuts as a model for success for his 10 percent flat-tax proposal. In fact, President Reagan raised taxes to close the budget deficit that opened up after he cut them in 1981. Ben Carson offered his muddled proposal for a tax equal to 15 percent of gross domestic product, saying it would be appealing to everyone once he “put all the facts down.”

Brazen Lies are now the driving force behind GOP messages. Paul Krugman

http://www.salon.com/2015/10/30/paul_krugman_brazen_lies_are_now_the_driving_force_behind_gop_politics/

New York Times columnist Paul Krugman lit into the hopefuls in the GOP’s latest debate for embracing what he considers a “grifter ethos.”
As personified by Ben Carson, who brazenly lied about his connection to Mannatech during Wednesday’s debate, the GOP candidates are participating in a system “in which marketers use political affinity to sell get-rich-quick schemes, miracle cures.”
“Right-wing warnings of imminent hyperinflation, coupled with demands that we return to the gold standard,” are a staple of conservative media, and such statements go unchallenged by Republican hopefuls eager to court the conservative base.
Because, as Krugman wrote,
At a higher level still are operations that are in principle engaging in political activity, but mainly seem to be generating income for their organizers. Last week The Times published an investigative report on some political action committees raising money in the name of anti-establishment conservative causes. The report found that the bulk of the money these PACs raise ends up going to cover administrative costs and consultants’ fees, very little to their ostensible purpose. For example, only 14 percent of what the Tea Party Leadership Fund spends is “candidate focused.”

NRA shoots and kills the truth about guns. (Only NRA talking points allowed)

http://crooksandliars.com/2015/10/nra-takes-truth-out-back-and-shoots-it

Now that we're a year out from the general election, all the knives -- er, guns -- are coming out, and of course they're all holstered in lies.
A new video from the National Rifle Association's (NRA) executive vice president Wayne LaPierre claims that President Obama "has all the laws he needs to stop the bloodshed" of gun violence in big cities but chooses not to because he supposedly refuses to enforce federal gun laws.
In fact, the NRA has engaged in a decades-long campaign to hinder the efforts of the federal law enforcement agency charged with enforcing federal gun laws, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF).
In an October 27 video released by NRA News, LaPierre claimed, "Under the existing federal gun laws, [Obama] could take every felon with a gun, drug dealer with a gun and criminal gangbanger with a gun off the streets tomorrow and lock them up for five years or more. But he won't do it, his Justice Department won't do it, and the media never asks why."
The video also featured LaPierre's continued apparent use of racially coded languageby contrasting "thugs like De'Eris Brown," "criminal gangbangers with illegal guns in Chicago," and "violent thugs" with "the good, honest Americans living out in farm towns in Nebraska or Oklahoma or working two jobs in inner-city Chicago or Baltimore." The video was introduced by LaPierre claiming "[n]othing illustrates America's breakdown like the way the president's hometown celebrates its holidays," before describing Chicago shootings as a "kind of third-world carnage."

Meat and Cancer: 5 Studies on Cancer Risk

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/to-your-health/wp/2015/10/27/the-science-against-meat-a-look-at-5-key-studies-about-cancer-risk/

After adjusting for age, sex, and a number of other factors they found that the more participants ate red and processed meat, the higher their colorectal cancer risk. They found the inverse for fish intake but no impact for poultry intake.
They calculated that the absolute risk of development of colorectal cancer within 10 years for a study subject aged 50 years was 1.71 percent for the highest category of red and processed meat intake (greater than 160 grams a day), and 1.28 percent for the lowest category of intake (less than 20 grams a day). For fish, they found the absolute risk to be 1.86 percent for subjects in the lowest category of fish intake (less than 10 grams a day) and 1.28 percent for subjects in the highest category of fish intake (more than 80 grams a day).
Note that the risks are the same for those who eat a small amount of meat and those who have the highest intake of fish.

Mass Shootings: An idea to prevent Mass Shootings: Interesting Idea - Should have been done long ago.

http://thinkprogress.org/health/2015/10/29/3717345/a-hotline-that-could-prevent-the-next-mass-shooting/

After a mass shooting, the nation debates the merits of strengthening gun safety laws or improving the mental health system. But what if it were possible to teach people how to decrease their desire to kill? James Kimmel, Jr. — an author and psychiatry lecturer at Yale University — believes that by focusing on motive control, we can move beyond the usual political arguments about gun safety or mental health and actually prevent a shooter from pulling the trigger.
Kimmel claims that many people who commit acts of violence are trying to achieve justice for a past wrong and are driven by a craving for revenge that, he says, “operates in the same pleasure center of the mind that activate for narcotics addiction.” “We know with narcotics addicts, that many people do drugs and they’re able to pull away from them successfully, but here is a core group of people who are vulnerable,” Kimmel told ThinkProgress.
That vulnerable population now has a new resource: SavingCain.org. The site, launched by Kimmel earlier this month and modeled on suicide prevention holtlines, hopes to engage shooters in a moment of dialogue before they act. It urges revenge seekers to consider calling a hotline for help or, among other things, a therapeutic tool called the non-justice system.

Very Good: Edited Video of the 3rd GOP Debate

http://www.ifyouonlynews.com/politics/watch-the-video-that-should-be-called-republicans-devolve-on-live-tv-a-must-see/

If you watched the Republican debate Wednesday night, you got to see exactly how people running for the most powerful seat in the free world should definitely not act. The GOP and the candidates tried to put the blame for the plethora of cross-talk, insults and interruptions on CNBC and their moderating team, but truth be told it was they who couldn’t remain civil for more than a few moments at a time, with almost every candidate whining about the questions, the format or their lack of camera time.
It was a mess. A free-for-all of stupid that devolved into nothing of substance within minutes. CNBC actually helped matters by largely ignoring Donald Trump and giving more time to people who seemed like they had something worthwhile to say, which wasn’t very often.
Nobody really knows who “won” the debacle, because really the only winners were the people who opted to watch Survivor instead.

The Republican Debate was embarrassing on so many levels.

http://bluenationreview.com/the-gop-debate-was-embarrassing-on-many-levels/

as we saw and heard on Wednesday night, government is absolutely awful. Government, they imply, having taken too much of your money, will now seek to acquire your guns and religious beliefs. The only thing that can save this great land is business. Oh sweet business, it will save us all.
The reflexive lionization of business by Republicans doesn’t get called out nearly enough by Democrats. There is a lengthy record of business screwing over customersemployees and the general public just in the past decade for the sole purpose of a strong quarterly earnings report. People have died and been grotesquely injured because of the relentless pursuit of ever more profit. Democrats don’t defend government and public institutions–which are by definition accountable to everyone–with anywhere close to the fervor of how the Republicans glorify business. The left needs to change this.

Hank managed to free himself and drive his stick shift vehicle to a neighbor's house. He was then able to be treated for his injuries thanks to -- you guessed it -- Obamacare.

Among the many benefits of the legalization of marijuana would be eliminating any lingering confusion about the legality of its close relation (read, basically the same plant), hemp. While the possession of industrial hemp, also known by its botanical moniker, Cannabis sativa, has never been illegal, the growing of industrial hemp was illegal until the recent passage of the 2014 Farm Bill. The hemp that is mostly illegal, with the exception, at this writing, of four states and the District of Columbia, the kind of hemp you smoke, put in brownies, and usually have a good ol' time after imbibing, contains a high concentration (three percent or more) of THC, the ingredient that induces the familiar Rocky Mountain high.

FOOD STAMPS help A LOT in bringing down Poverty Rates: New Study

http://www.vox.com/2015/10/27/9618332/meyer-snap-housing-underreporting

from 2008 to 2011 in New York, the average poverty rate before taking these programs into account was 13.6 percent. According to the survey data, food stamps/welfare/housing assistance dropped that down to 10.8 percent. But according to the more accurate administrative data, those programs actually cut the rate to 8.3 percent. Using the right numbers, in other words, nearly doubles the poverty-fighting power of these programs. The differences for "deep poverty" — that is, the share of households living on 50 percent of the poverty line or less — are a bit smaller, but for "near poverty" (the share of households living on 150 percent of the poverty line or less) they're even bigger, as the above chart suggests.
The survey's shortcomings are even greater when you look at households headed by a single mother, a particularly vulnerable group with a poverty rate of 37.5 percent before these programs are taken into account. The survey data suggests that welfare/food stamps/housing assistance cut that down to 30.2 percent. The administrative data suggests they actually cut it to 19.2 percent.

FIGHTING POVERTY: Food Stamps have a BIGGER Impact on poverty reduction than thought. New Study

http://www.vox.com/2015/10/27/9618332/meyer-snap-housing-underreporting

new study suggests that programs like food stamps and housing vouchers cut poverty by almost twice as much as we thought they did.
According to standard census numbers, the poverty rate in New York from 2008 to 2011 was 13.6 percent, before taking these programs into account. The programs the study examines — food stamps (a.k.a. SNAP), welfare (a.k.a. TANF), state-level general assistance programs, and housing aid — dropped that down to 10.8 percent. But the study suggests the real number was even lower: a mere 8.3 percent. If that's true, then the estimated poverty-fighting power of these programs has been dramatically understated for years.

People really don't like telling the census they get government help

The official data on poverty comes from the Current Population Survey's (CPS) Annual Social and Economic Supplement (ASEC), a yearly survey that reaches about 100,000 addresses and yields detailed information on household incomes, education levels, health insurance, and use of government assistance programs.

Elizabeth Warren talking about Hillary Clinton in a 2004 interview - important information

http://theimmoralminority.blogspot.com/2015/10/elizabeth-warren-talking-about-hillary.html

Politics is a horrible business flush with money to change minds - and it does.  Big bucks buy what they want and will willingly screw us average folks.

Now if you will notice Warren really stresses how intelligent and formidable Hillary Clinton was back when she was First Lady. And she also kind of gives Hillary a pass, to some degree, for her vote later which ultimately undid all of the work she did previously.

As grownups of course we understand how politics works.

However we also know that the main criticism against Hillary is that her positions change with the polls, and that she is not a person of substance.

I do not agree with that completely, but I would be lying if I did not admit that it was reason for concern.

Now this does not mean that I will not vote for Hillary.

I will.

It also does not mean that I think she cannot win against any of the Republican choices.

She can. And most likely will.

Hillary's testimony in front of the Benghazi Committee: Hillary will be the next President after this performance

Which was backed up in the most blunt manner possible by Rep. Jason Chaffetz back in 2012:

On Wednesday morning, CNN anchor Soledad O'Brien asked the Utah Republican if he had "voted to cut the funding for embassy security."

"Absolutely," Chaffetz said. "Look we have to make priorities and choices in this country. We have…15,000 contractors in Iraq. We have more than 6,000 contractors, a private army there, for President Obama, in Baghdad. And we’re talking about can we get two dozen or so people into Libya to help protect our forces. When you’re in tough economic times, you have to make difficult choices. You have to prioritize things.”

Which kind of makes me wonder how these Republicans have the cojones to grill Hillary on why there was not adequate security to protect Ambassador Stephens.

If Planned Parenthood is out of Business: Where do women get the help they need?

http://rhrealitycheck.org/article/2015/10/22/rights-answer-gutting-planned-parenthood-elementary-schools-homeless-shelters-jails/

“GetYourCare.org was created to show that women have real choices when it comes to health care,” the site says. “All across America, thousands of low-cost health centers offer women and their families high-quality health care.”
press release from the Alliance Defending Freedom claimed that the facilities listed on the map “typically offer the full range of women’s health services without all the scandal of Planned Parenthood.”
But in an investigation into the facilities, RH Reality Check has found that these “real choices” include hundreds of elementary, middle, and high schools; clinics that provide care for homeless people; nursing homes; pediatrics centers; and even the D.C. jail. RH Reality Check called and emailed hundreds of the facilities listed on the map, and discovered that many of their spokespeople were bewildered by the notion that women would be directed to their facilities for reproductive health services.
School officials, in particular, were confused that they would be asked to provide reproductive and sexual health services to the general population. The GetYourCare site explains that there are over 600 schools listed because they “have been identified as providing girls’ and women’s health care services at ‘school-based health centers’ on location. Thus, the school serves as a very real option for girls and young women in the area who need healthcare.”
In fact, virtually none of the 60 schools RH Reality Check contacted from the list said they provide health care to girls and women in the community.

I direct the intensive care unit at the only Level I pediatric trauma center on Chicago's South Side, where we treat children with all manner of illness. I felt well prepared to manage the full spectrum of diseases when I moved from Boston to Chicago in 2009, with one major exception.
During my first week in Chicago, I cared for as many children with gunshot wounds as I had seen over the course of two years in Boston. Last year alone, we treated 54 children with gunshots at my hospital, more than the deadliest school shooting in America's history.
Recently I admitted a teenager whose body was permanently destroyed by the effects of this affliction, after surviving the original injury. He was paralyzed from the shoulders down, with tubes protruding from his windpipe and stomach. He endured recurrent pneumonias, urinary tract infections, pressure ulcers and depression. At 15 years old and almost 6 feet tall, he weighed barely 110 pounds. His cheeks were gaunt, eyes dark and sunken, limbs thin and contracted. He looked nothing like the spry teen he once was, lean and fit and 50 pounds heavier, before he was shot in the back.

Creationism is not Science: It is Child Abuse

Intentionally teaching kids crazy information is wrong  The earth is Billions of years old, not 6000 years.

Faith, Jesus told his followers, is a personal matter. Religion, on the other hand — is big business. Yes, Christians, you’re instructed to share the Good News, but I don’t recall Christ ever saying, “or else.” Let’s leave the fanatical extremism of religion to the pros of ISIS (more accurately ISIL, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant). If you’re uncomfortable with the analogy — that should be your first clue. If it made you feel militant, defensive or combative? Congratulations — you’re part of the problem.
One-by-one, Christians across this country are actively seeking out ways to climb up on the cross and sacrifice themselves on the altar of public piety (which is antithetical to Scripture). The Walmart fashion plate from Kentucky springs to mind — as do any of a dozen Republican politicians, such as the junior Senator from Texas, Rafael Edward “Ted” Cruz. “Ted” believes people who trust science, “want to persecute anyone that has a good faith religious belief.” Wrong again, “Ted.”
This is America — where you’re free to believe anything you like. If you want to remain ignorant to what mankind has learned through scientific discovery (preferring to get your information from the 2nd century BCE) — then God bless. If you want to teach my childrenit’s okay to remain ignorant, telling them that apocryphal stories designed to placate the masses is “science”? — we’ve got a problem.

http://www.kcentv.com/story/30298765/gun-falls-out-of-purse-results-in-accidental-shooting-in-beaumont

BEAUMONT (KBMT) -- Beaumont police officers are investigating an apparent accidental shooting Monday morning at the Christus Outpatient Pavilion located in the 700 block of 11th Street.
A witness told KCEN's sister station 12News that a woman was in the waiting room of a medical office.  When she reached into her purse to pull out some paperwork, a gun fell out of her purse causing it to discharge. The round went through a wall and hit another patient in the hip.
Bobby Pressley was in the waiting room when it happened.
"Everyone was sitting in the waiting room and there was a gun shot. A woman dropped her purse down on the counter and it shot through the wall and shot another lady," said Pressley.
A spokesperson for the Beaumont Police Department told 12News that the injuries of the person whom was shot are not considered life threatening.  The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The 3-year-old daughter of a Georgia sheriff's deputy accidentally shot herself in the leg in Dodge County, according to the local news channel WMGT.

The little girl, who was not identified because of her age, is the daughter of Deputy Dorian Johnson and Lakeasha Smith. Dodge County Sheriff Lynn Sheffield told local media that while moving some furniture around in the family's home, Smith had removed the gun from a chest of drawers and put it on the bed. At the time, Smith believed the girl was in a different room, but it appears that the child crawled onto the bed, picked up the gun and shot herself in the right leg.

American Workers are rising up: Income Equality is the issue

Lost in the tumult of covering the 2016 presidential campaign trail is a striking reality that’s largely gone unacknowledged: the brewing revolt at the grassroots by working- and middle-class Americans who feel left behind by the system.
This discontent and its insecurities are fueling the surges of Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump, who offer different responses to it, and whose candidacies haven’t faded despite predictions from party insiders and many pundits. It’s also underscored by the fact that the GOP’s two leading candidates—Trump and Ben Carson—have never held elective office, unlike the senators and governors trailing them.

Margaret and Helen: Women have always had to work twice as hard to get half the respect

Women have always had to work twice as hard to get half the respect and for 99 years Planned Parenthood has stood by us. Today we stand by them.  #IStandWithPlannedParenthood

Greg Abbott is an asshat: Margaret and Helen

http://margaretandhelen.com/2015/10/20/greg-abbott-is-an-asshat/

Margaret,  I am madder than a wet hen and anyone looking for humor in this post probably isn’t going to find it.  The best thing that came out of writing this webpage blog was learning what the term Asshat means.  I wish we knew the person who first wrote that years ago because it has become one of my favorite words, and when it comes to Asshats there isn’t a better example than Texas Governor Greg Abbott.  If anyone out there still thinks there isn’t a Republican war on women, I suggest they look in the mirror to see what hat they are wearing as well.
Denying women access to family planning will increase the number of abortions.  Even an asshat knows that.  And Abbott knows that tens of thousands of women in Texas use Planned Parenthood for basic family planning and gynecological care.

US DOES NOT have the highest Tax Rate: Trump is a liar

http://www.occupydemocrats.com/fact-checkers-trump-is-a-liar-u-s-doesnt-have-highest-tax-rate-in-the-world/

The fantasyland of Trump and his apparently mindless supporters aside, in reality this statement couldn’t be further from the truth no matter how you measure it. A list compiled by the international tax advising firm KPMG found that the United States’ top income tax rate – 39.6% – ranks 33rd out of 112 countries surveyed. A different analysisranked the U.S. 38th out of 155 countries. As for the bottom income tax level, the United States’ minimum of 10% ranked 42nd out of 152 countries surveyed by Ernst & Young, an international accounting firm.
Despite these middle of the pack rankings – and the fact that after deductions the average American pays aneffective tax rate of only 9.5% – one could argue that such measures are inadequate because of some nations’ emphasis on corporate or payroll taxes rather than income taxes. No cigar for The Donald here either, though. In fact, the United States ranks even lower internationally on analyses that measure the overall tax burden. For example, in the measurement of tax revenue as a percentage of GDP – widely considered an effective measure by tax experts – the United States’ rate of 25% ranks it 27th out of 30 advanced economies studied by the OECD. In a World Bank ranking of taxation as a percentage of GDP, the U.S. ranked a far-from-the-highest 103rd out of 115 countries studied. Finally, when ranking by the measure of tax revenue per capita, the U.S. figure of $13,482 ranks us 16th out of 29 countries surveyed by the OECD.
