Michael Glidden was wandering the ice-blue remains of a glacier in the Chugach National Forest Saturday when he spotted one particularly, deep, dark tunnel, he says.

The Anchorage retiree and his two American Eskimo Dogs, Shasta and Aspen, ventured inside. Temperatures had dipped to 29 degrees along the riverbeds outside.

Hi, this is Michael. I am the one who took the photo. Yes, its all real. Now that I think back on it I realize how dumb I was to go explore an ice cave in winter, where bear would probably be. The main cave was a long shaft with openings at both ends lit by sunlight filtering through thin ice. I lingered in the cave for some time. I even narrated a video. There was one very dark passage I could not see into. I set my cameras flash on and aimed the camera into the dark. One of my puppies, Aspen, went into the dark and I snapped the picture. Right away Aspen darted out. I thought he was startled by the flash. I never did see into the dark cavern, the flash was so fast. The temperature had dropped so I stayed in the main part of the cave for about 15 more minutes taking pictures. When I got home I was looking over the pictures and I was amazed to see what my flash had captured. The hibernating black bear only a few yards from where I took the picture and Aspen darting out! Like I said, I know now it was dumb of me to have gone into a cave in winter. The picture is priceless and I hope it gives many people the joy of a good story.
