EMMONAK IS SUPER BUSY TODAY!

Planes were flying in from town from all over Alaska. We had 3 BIG EVENTS going on today and this weekend The BIG EVENT was the funeral. It was so big that they could not have it at the church. The family alone would have taken up the whole church. They had to have the funeral in the Community Center. Lots of planes bringing people in to this. There were at least 60 snow mobiles outside the funeral.

The other big events are basketball games: EMMONAK Jr. Hi. sent 3 teams to other schools to play games. Those 3 teams had to fly out. WE ALSO HAVE BASKETBALL TOURNAMENTS HERE IN EMMONAK: So we have 4 teams that flew into Emmonak today.

PLANES WERE FLYING IN AND OUT ALL DAY! I have to watch halls at the school from 8:30 - 10:00 PM.

POWDERED MILK: I have eaten lunch at school 3 or 4 times but I could swear that the milk is powdered milk. IT IS POWDERED MILK!! The cost of shipping refrigerated milk cartons is cost prohibitive, we get powdered milk. Most of milk is water - lots of weight and costs a lot to ship.

You have to watch halls? Like to make sure kids aren't screwing around by the classrooms and stuff?
Oh, and did you get Leopard yet?

We have about 40 kids playing basketball abd then sleeping at our school. I get to take tickets and hang out until 10 PM tonight and tomorrow.

No Panther yet.

Hi Uncle Rich
Sorry to hear about Emmonak's loss but how great to see the community community coming together.
I had my share of powdered Milk in Mongolia. Just doesnt quite taste the same! I was very excited when the European boxed milk came to town...I still dont quite understand how unrefridgerated boxed milk works!
Valuable lesson you learned about the hat and snowpants! Another good piece of advice is to wiggle your toes often! And also, keep your cheaks covered or you'll have permanent blush from frost bite!

Hi Kim,

What kind of temperatures did you have in Mongolia?

The milk I buy for home is super pastueurized, so it can sit at room temp for years, they say.

So many people here have permanent pink cheeks. I left the game at 11 PM and kids were playing outside in 15 below zero. One boy only had a sweatshirt with a hood and no gloves along with blue jeans.
I was freezing with full snow gear.

THE SKY WAS SO CLEAR AND THE STARS WERE OUT! It was beautiful, but cold last night.

I'm glad Kim is weighing in here. She's really the only one of us who's got room to speak on how to survive real cold.

Hey ya all, super pasteurized milk essentially has no nutritional value - as I recently read. And, it's generally chawked full of antibiotics and non-natural hormones. At least the stuff in the lower 50.

You're better off drinking water, taking a calcium supplement and using powdered milk for cereals, cooking projects, etc. Drinking it straight up may be a stretch for those of us used to real milk.
