In addition to being a hero, Fletcher is an accomplished poet. In 2013, while still in high school, he won a city-wide poetry slam for a piece about anti-Muslim sentiment after 9/11. "I just hope that people are listening and try to do something about it," he said at the time.
As for the poem he wrote from his hospital bed, it too is about standing up to hatred:

Fletcher's girlfriend, Miranda Helm, told the Oregonian that Fletcher's wound was only millimeters away from his jugular, and that he underwent two hours of surgery to remove bone fragments from his throat this weekend. A friend of Fletcher's has set up a GoFundMe page to help with his medical expenses.
