Comey Firing Yet Another Major White House Bungle

Amid the furor surrounding the abrupt decision to fire James Comey, two facts have emerged that stand in evidence that the Trump White House is incredibly incompetent.

The announcement itself came as a complete bombshell, and it has rocked the country to its core. Calls for a special, independent investigation into the ties between Trump and Russia have only increased with the dismissal of the very man who was investigating those ties. The comparisons between Trump and Nixon have multiplied exponentially.

And James Comey?

Well, it appears he found out he was fired the same way the rest of the country did – through the television. In fact, he was caught so unaware that he actually thought it was a joke.

The New York Times reported:

“Mr. Comey was addressing a group of F.B.I. employees in Los Angeles when a television in the background flashed the news that he had been fired.

“In response, Mr. Comey laughed, saying he thought it was a fairly funny prank.

“Then his staff started scurrying around in the background and told Mr. Comey that he should step into a nearby office.

“Mr. Comey stopped addressing the group. He proceeded to shake hands with the employees he had been speaking to. Then he stepped into a side office, where he confirmed that he had been fired. At that point, he had not heard from the White House.”

The Trump White House is so incompetent that they allowed the media to get hold of the story before the man they were firing even knew he was being fired.

But the second fact amid the onslaught of news surrounding the firing of James Comey is even more egregious.

Firing Comey – No Big Deal, Right?

Even if you can get beyond the absolute absurd idea that the Trump administration fired James Comey over his handling of the investigation into Clinton’s private server – which you shouldn’t – and if you can swallow the hypocrisy of their statement that “the FBI is unlikely to regain public and congressional trust until it has a director who understands the gravity of the mistakes and pledges never to repeat them,” which most won’t be able to, the Trump White House still showed a stunning lack of insight in their decision.

Because, according to inside sources, senior White House officials didn’t think there would be much political backlash over the decision.

Yes. Senior White House officials didn’t think there would be much reaction over the fact that the President of the United States, whose campaign, at the very least, is undergoing FBI investigation, fired the guy who was leading that investigation.

CNN reports:

“[S]enior White House officials appeared to have badly misjudged the impact of Trump’s sudden move. A source with knowledge of discussions inside the White House told CNN’s Dana Bash that the thinking was that because Democrats were saying precisely what Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said in a letter explaining the grounds for Comey’s dismissal there would be no backlash.

“What was not thought through apparently was an explanation of why Comey was fired now, at a time when critics would immediately conclude it was because of the Russia probe.”
