After the American Health Care Act was pulled from the floor during the lead up to the vote on Friday, Lawrence O’Donnell took to The Last Word with some fiery language about what all of this meant for the presidency of Donald Trump.
“It is impossible — impossible — to exaggerate the enormity of what happened to Donald Trump [Friday]”, O’Donnell said. “His presidency effectively ended [Friday]… He is a powerless president,” he continued.
The MSNBC host made these statements due to the yesterday’s health care drama: Trump pulling the American Health Care Act mere hours before it was scheduled to be voted on. This eleventh hour reneging came after a fraught 24 hours that saw POTUS lampoon the Freedom Caucus over their lack of support and refuse to negotiate any further changes in the bill prior to the vote.
O’Donnell then took a moment to lay into President Trump, saying that he will “of course still have Commander-in-Chief authority over the machinery of war but he has exercised more authority over the machinery of golf since becoming president.” He then went on to reference the president’s seeming refusal to shake German Chancellor Angela Merkel‘s hand during her recent visit to the White House.
“The president has lost his first big legislative battle. There’s a sentence I have never said before,” O’Donnell claimed. He went on to detail how party support faltered behind Trump, making reference to then-president Bill Clinton and his first legislative venture only passing by one vote in both the House and Senate.
