Stephen Colbert went live after last night’s debate. He opened with a nice joke both Republicans and Democrats can get behind.
We just witnessed the third and final debate. Because two’s not quite enough, and I think four would make us go cannibal.
Colbert started off with the question of campaign rigging and Donald Trump’s now infamous “suspense” response to Chris Wallace’s question about the peaceful transfer of power. Colbert plays Trump’s insane response, then searches for a word to explain what he thinks of Trump’s response.
[Cut to debate footage]
Hillary Clinton: That’s horrifying.
[Cut back to studio]
Colbert: Thank you.
Colbert asks to hear Trump’s response again, specifically Trump saying “I’ll keep you in suspense.” It is here that Colbert drops any discernible late-night act.
Oh, suspense! Suspense! Democracy is going to end with a cliffhanger. I guess we’re all going to have to wait until November 9 to find out if we still have a country. If Donald Trump is in the mood for a peaceful transfer of power or if he’s going to wipe his fat ass with the Constitution.
The rest of the opening monologue segment is funny, including “footage” of Kellyanne Conway talking with media after the debate, and the choice of the candidates’ debate invitees. The whole piece is worth watching but the fireworks come right away in the beginning.
