Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio was just slapped with civil contempt of court charges and is now facing a criminal contempt of court charge –and the possibility of prison– after flagrantly violating a judge’s orders on racial profiling. To jog your memory, Sheriff Arpaio is the crotchety old racist uncle you dread having to sit next to at family gathering.

The ruling comes from U.S. District Judge Murray Snow, who is holding Arpaio in contempt on three counts. The decision brings an end to a seemingly never-ending proceeding, which started a year ago when Snow convened a series of hearings determine whether Arpaio and his commanders defied Snow’s court orders. They went on to spend millions trying to get out of it – which apparently didn’t work.

In short, the Court finds that the Defendants have engaged in multiple acts of misconduct, dishonesty, and bad faith with respect to the Plaintiff class and the protection of its rights, Snow wrote in a 162-page finding of fact in the case. (AZ Central)
