During the rally, mob mentality took over. Nearly everyone around me asked if I was a protester, even though I was never affectionate with my girlfriend. While justifying my presence, I moved throughout the venue to record some of the dozen interruptions protesters completed against Trump. A woman younger than 20 was tackled by a security member, while Trump was backtracking by saying that he wanted to begin to “be nice” to the protesters, because we are so weak and alone. Then, a Trump supporter pulled a protestor to the ground by grabbing her hair and dragging her while she was being escorted out of the rally; Secret Service members stood by watching. Meanwhile, Trump laid out his new policy of the night: arresting and prosecuting protesters. In the time I was listening to his speech, he had nothing to say other than bullying remarks and divisive statements against those who were standing up against him.
Outside, hundreds had gathered against Trump’s hateful rhetoric and racist followers. Another arrest occurred: a woman who was wrongfully accused of throwing a water bottle at the police. Just before I joined my people on the street, a crowd had been pepper sprayed with mace cannons for stepping off the curb. With the venue at capacity, there were still Trump supporters outside cheering this on.
As I arrived to the protest outside, my friends were trying to take the streets. These are people who are queer, immigrants, and some #feelthebern activists. They were united to stand against Trump and the notorious KCMO police force who were supporting him and his gang of bigots. They linked arms and walked toward the police. The police met them with their horses and cannoned pepper spray canisters. With mace fresh in the air, the crowd ran. Protesters came together and treated those attacked with a milk wash while a Trump supporter walked by with his middle finger held high. “You all are fucking idiots. You fuckers got what’s coming to you. Goddamn faggots.”
