Addressing reporters at the White House on Tuesday morning, the commander in chief laid out his plan to close the controversial prison in an attempt to keep the promise he made on the campaign trail eight years ago. Obama noted that Gitmo "undermines" American national security, as reported by the BCC on Feb. 23.

Gitmo coming to an end?

"The detention facility at Guantanamo Bay does not advance our national security," Obama said, as the room filled with reporters, explaining that it is "viewed as a stain" on the United States' record around the world. Obama said he was "submitting to Congress our plan for finally closing the facility at Guantanamo once and for all." In an attempt to paint the plan as bipartisan, Obama cited former President George W. Bush's previous support for closing Gitmo. "My predecessor, President Bush, said he wanted to close it." While no location was named for where current detainees would be transferred to, one will be decided in due time.
