During his first court appearance since his arrest, Nevada rancher and anti-government icon Cliven Bundy requested a court-appointed attorney Thursday, according to The Oregonian.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Janice M. Stewart said she needed to see Bundy's financial documents to assess whether he should receive a public defender.
"The court only appoints counsel for those who can't afford an attorney," Stewart said, according to The Oregonian.

Bundy appeared in federal court in Portland, where he was arrested Wednesday night for charges related to the 2014 standoff with federal authorities at his ranch in Nevada He faces six charges, including conspiracy to commit an offense against the U.S. and assault of a federal officer.
Stewart ordered Bundy to remain in custody until Tuesday when he will appear in court again, according to The Oregonian.
Bundy was appointed an attorney for the initial appearance, who said that Bundy was separated from his blood pressure medications when he was arrested, according to Oregon Public Broadcasting. Attorney Ruben Iñiguez said that Bundy has been suffering from the effects of not taking his medication, and the judge said Bundy would be examined by doctors and prescribed the proper medication, according to OPB.
