If Guns were as hard to get as Abortions

This week St. Louis Magazine reported that a Missouri state representative, Stacey Newman, prefiled a bill that seeks to put access to guns and access to abortion on equal footing. Currently “no state permit is required for the purchase of rifles, shotguns or handguns,” in Missouri, yet women there are subjected to a 72-hour waiting period, counseling, and a variety of other rigmarole in order to obtain an abortion. “If we truly insist that Missouri cares about ‘all life’,” Newman said, “then we must take immediate steps to address our major cities’ rising rates of gun violence.” Her law would demand that gun buyers meet with a physician 72 hours before purchasing a gun; buy a firearm at least 120 miles from home; visit a trauma center where gunshot victims are brought; watch a 30-minute video about fatal firearm accidents, and more. In a year that already has seen over 12,000 gun-related deaths, and according to some tallies, well over 300 mass shootings, it's no surprise that some local lawmakers are fed up with the status quo.
