A McLennan County deputy stands guard near a group of bikers being detained in the parking lot of Twin Peaks Restaurant after Sunday's gunfight.
Several factions of rival motorcycle gangs are believed responsible for a large gunfight that killed nine bikers and injured 18 outside a Waco, Texas restaurant, authorities said Sunday. The lunchtime shooting sent witnesses scrambling for cover outside the Twin Peaks Restaurant where a shootout spilled out into the parking lot between three known “rival criminal biker gangs,” Waco Police Sgt. W Patrick Swanton said at a press conference.
Several law enforcement agencies including uniformed Waco police officers were already outside the restaurant as hundreds of gang members converged. They were expecting trouble. Despite their presence, the shootout ignited with officers returning fire amid pandemonium.
“We are not horse playing,” Swanton said. “So many rounds were fired from bad guy weapons here. It is amazing that innocent civilians were not injured here."
No officers were among the 18 injured in what he described as the biggest gun battle in the history of Waco’s city limits.
