Global Warming
In 2008, the largest calving event of a glacier was caught on film by
Adam LeWinter and Jeff Orlowski at the Ilulissat Glacier in Greenland.
This calving event was where a part of the glacier, the size of
Manhattan island, slipped into the ocean.
All in all, the entire event lasted 75 minutes and while calving
events are normal for glaciers terminating in the ocean, it is rare that
such a large piece of ice breaks off. Scientists who viewed the film
record, have concluded that the increase pressure on the glacier and the
thermal effects from the ocean have coincided in such a manner to
illustrate the effects of global climate change on the glacier’s
progress.
